Letter from RESPECT. Founder

I’m honored to curate along with longtime collaborator, Datwon Thomas, “Brooklyn’s Finest: Legends in Focus” — a civic installation opening February 4 at Brooklyn Borough Hall, presented as part of Black History Month.

This installation brings together a selection of photographs that honor Brooklyn’s sizable impact on hip-hop culture and the photographers who helped document it. Hip-hop is one of New York City’s great cultural gifts to the world, and photography has been essential to how that story has been seen, remembered, and carried forward across generations.

With a limited number of images, it’s impossible to represent every Brooklyn rap artist, era, or neighborhood that helped build the legacy. Instead, this installation focuses on a tightly curated group of works reflecting the spirit, pride, and influence of Brookly —celebrating Hip-Hop icons whose lives and cultural contributions are deeply rooted in the borough.

At the heart of this display is the work of Jamel Shabazz, the legendary Brooklyn-born street photographer whose images have come to define generations of NY life, culture, and self-expression. His photographs are inseparable from Brooklyn’s visual history and from the lived experience of street culture itself.

The installation also features contributions from Matthew Salacuse, Mike Schreiber, Sarah A. Freeman, Justin Jay, and Lisa Leone—documentarians whose work captured BK icons in their respective emerging moments. The display is anchored by one of the most iconic portraits in music history: Baron Claiborne’s timeless image of The Notorious B.I.G., a photograph forever linked to BK’s imprint on the world.

At the center of the installation is a sequence honoring The Greatest Day in Hip-Hop History—a historic moment I helped organize in 1998 that brought together one of the most extraordinary assemblies of artists ever captured in a single image. While Harlem is the Mecca, Brooklyn showed up—and this moment belongs here because the culture has always moved between boroughs. The image featured here was captured by Gordon Parks’ trusted protégé, Johanna Fiore, whose lens preserves that day from a rare and personal vantage point. There also two images by yours truly capturing Busta Rhymes and Rakim on that day in 1998. Being in the right place at the right time is often what makes photography magical.

Additionally, a proclamation will be given to Hip-Hop pioneer, Fab5Freddy.

As a proud Brooklyn native, and as a co-founder of XXL Magazine/xxlmag.com and founder of RESPECT., the photo journal of hip-hop culture, it’s an honor for my firm iD8 Entertainment to underwrite and curate this installation in a civic space where New Yorkers can experience these images together.

Thank you to the Brooklyn Borough Hall President’s Office (Donavan Swanson and Roslyn Campbell) and the Borough Hall team for making space for public cultural storytelling.

The installation features legendary hip-hop figures including Rakim, Slick Rick, Fat Joe, Da Brat, E-40, Busta Rhymes, Reverend Run, Naughty By Nature, who gathered to participate in a photo shoot led by renowned Black photographer Gordon Parks to pay homage to Art Kane’s “A Great Day in Harlem.”

The installation was made possible thanks to iD8Studios, Musinart and RESPECT. magazine — The Photo Journal of Hip-Hop Culture.

The exhibition at City Hall features images that take viewers behind the scenes for “The Greatest Day in Hip-Hop History.” In 1998, hip-hop magazine XXL and their Editor-in-Chief Sheena Lester set out to remake Art Kane’s legendary 1958 Esquire magazine photo shoot, known as “A Great Day In Harlem,” with hip-hop artists. Kane’s image featured 57 of the greatest jazz musicians of the time gathered around the stoop at 17 West 126th street in Harlem. XXL were looking to pay homage to that iconic image by gathering hip-hop legends on the same stoop 40 years later. Renowned Black photographer Gordon Parks was recruited, and ultimately 177 rappers were assembled in Harlem. The photos remain as defining for hip-hop culture as the original photo shoot was for jazz.

Photograph by Art Kane – Courtesy © Art Kane Archive – ArtKane.com

“NYC has always been the place to be thanks to the artists and art forms that thrive here, and it’s no coincidence that hip-hop and jazz – not one but TWO world-shaping artforms – developed right here in the greatest city on earth,” said NYC Cultural Affairs Commissioner Laurie Cumbo. “As part of the Adams administration’s broader effort to showcase artwork in city buildings that better reflects the beauty and diversity of New Yorkers, this remarkable exhibition of ‘Hip-Hop’s Greatest Day’ pays tribute to the artists who made New York the cradle of these two global artistic movements. I invite all New Yorkers to see the powerful images curated by our partners at Musinart, iD8 Studios and RESPECT. magazine right here in City Hall, and to relive the greatest day in hip-hop history.”

“In this one-of-a-kind exhibition, we share never-before-exhibited, behind-the-scenes images of the epic event, which gathered close to 200 influential rap artists that shaped what is considered to be one of hip-hop’s most important moments,” said Jonathan Rheingold, exhibit curator, co-founder of XXL and RESPECT. and President of iD8 Studios and Musinart. “The ‘Hip-Hop’s Greatest Day’ installation at City Hall will transport you to the heart of rap history — to the stoops on 126th street in Harlem, where the unimaginable happened. As we pay tribute to the 25th anniversary of this epic event, I made it a mission to identify folks who were snapping photos on 126th street that day and developed the largest archive of behind-the-scenes photos documenting that great day. This unique installation gives visitors a glimpse at the block that day through images that were captured by Parks’ protégé and right hand, Johanna Fiore, former SLAM and XXL editor Ben Osborne, and myself. Working on this exhibit has been a remarkable journey. We aimed to capture the essence of ‘The Greatest Day in Hip-Hop History’ and are thrilled that Mayor Adams and his staff have made such great efforts to acknowledge hip-hop culture’s impact and its birthplace of New York City — the greatest city in the world.”

For viewers inspired by the exhibition to learn more hip-hop history, the award-winning podcast series “The Greatest Day” is now available on Audible. It takes listeners through the beats, rhymes, and powerful message of the image that shattered the negative perceptions associated with Hip-Hop and celebrated an entire generation. This audio series was recently nominated for a NAACP Image Award. For more history about “Hip-Hop’s Greatest Day” visit hiphopsgreatestday.com.

This installation is part of the Adams administration’s broader effort to bring more art into city buildings, showcasing the talents and histories of New Yorkers in the spaces that belong to them. To celebrate 50 years of hip-hop culture, Mayor Adams unveiled an imagery installation celebrating 50 years of hip-hop culture in the City Hall Rotunda. The installation captures posters and flyers from the early days of hip-hop, featuring legendary figures such as Run DMC, Clive Campbell aka DJ Kool Herc, Salt-N-Pepa, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Donations were made possible thanks to the Universal Hip-hop Museum’s curators and historians, Pete Nice and Paradise Gray. Previously, an exhibition of photos of Alvin Ailey dancers was installed; artwork by artist Roy Nachum was installed in April 2023; an installation by artist Elena del Rivero was unveiled on Women’s History Day in March 2023; and additional installations are planned for other city buildings in the future.

Members of the public can visit the installation by joining a public tour of City Hall. At one point, I broke off with my camera and took some shots of him sitting in front of what, at the time of this photo, was the only brownstone we anticipated would be needed for the shoot. Art Kane was an art director at the time, looking to transition his career to photography. He pitched his idea for a huge jazz group portrait on location in Harlem, and Esquire said yes. The photograph — and his other conceptual portraits of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Lester Young — created a sensation. Art Kane went on to become a major and influential photographer creating groundbreaking images in jazz, rock, fashion and editorial photo illustration.

–Jonathan Kane

RESPECT.

Join this talk with publishing luminaries as they discuss and reveal never-before-seen beyond-the-scenes images taken that day by numerous photographers.

This event will also celebrate the original photo that started it all, shot by Art Kane in 1958 at the very same location on 126th Street in Harlem, NY.

NeverLeveled founded in 2015 by Founder & CEO Guy B Duhon Jr and President Lamar Brumfield has produced many live entertainment events such as their own Culture A Destination Festival, Live Nations How The West Was Won, SXSW, many local comedy shows, concerts and television series. Built on loyalty and respect, the company has worked with the likes of, DC Young Fly, Desi Banks, Janet Jackson, Chris Duhon, Matt Forte, NFL Linebacker Tim Williams, Artist Keenan Chapman, Iman Omari, Pee Rarie, V Bozeman, KD Aubert, Compton AD, OG Cuicide and the list continues. In speaking to Guy & Lamar, they look to continue their Soul & Paint production fall of 2020, within the conversation it was mentioned they will roll out their network NeverLeveled.tv. The network consists of Live Television, Netflix, YouTube, Zoom and Socialmedia combined, with various of ways to interact. We were extremely surprised of the platform technology and capabilities. The virtual concert and live entertainment aspect make their platform more advance than many. The lineup they’ll build up to for live entertainment is unheard of and you add major & independent films, podcasts, news, weather, various live entertainment, content creators and the staff onboard as creators. NeverLeveled has earned our respect and we’re looking forward to their launch date.
