In Winter 2016 RESPECT. magazine was invited by 300 Entertainment to get on-stage at the Knitting Factor in Brooklyn, NY to capture the Birth of a New Nation Tour, featuring rising stars Dae Dae, Shy Grizzy & PnB Rock.

PnB (Rakim Hasheem Allen December 9, 1991 – September 12, 2022) had just released a collaborative mixtape with Fetty Wap earlier that year, called Money Hoes and Flows. It featured guest verses from RESPECT. cover subject, Boogie Wit da Hoodie,and Fetty’s goto man, Monty.

As a rising star PnB released “My city need something.” A track depicting the high rate of violence and crime surrounding the city of Philadelphia. This prohpetic track sends chills up one spine if you listen to the lyrics. Currently, the highest rate of violence ever to hit Phila, one would have to say he was preacher ahead of his time.

“I don’t know what’s going on
But I know that something’s wrong
And I know that lately
My city has been crazy
It’s like every day somebody gone
And every time I turn around I hear them gun sounds”

PnB Rock tore the house down that night in BK. His ability to captivate then hypnotize the audience was unique — with a level of maturity not typically seen in a developing talent.

Upon his untimely death, photographer Trevor Sage-El recalled the RESPECT. shoot and reached out suggesting we dig in the crates. Upon locating the images in the archive, we were immediately transported back in time. You can sense the electricity in these powerful shots, as though he’s still with us. Today, as his suspected killer was arrested, we send this message to PnB:

Rest In Power, King …

“I knew something was special about PnB when I was on stage at the show. Everyone with their ear to the streets knew eh was out of the ordinary. When I got home and reviewed the images of all next-gen artists I captured for RESPECT. that night, he truly stood out. While he may be gone … you can still feel his presence in these photos — and in the conscious of the culture. He was already an icon … just yet to be realized.” – Trevor Sage-El

L.A.’s Finest … Estevan Oriol Goes Behind The Lens

Almost a decade ago, as RESPECT. was working on its second issue, we designated 50 Cent as the cover feature. Head editor Kris Ex was soon to conduct an interview with 50 by phone. The call ultimately happened, and legend has it Ex ended up with an inaudible recording of 50 not providing much of a story. In that very issue, we laid out a photo-archive feature slated to celebrate the work of photographer Estevan Oriol. RESPECT.exclusively published classic photo archives by some of the greatest image takers of the culture. Sally Berman, RESPECT.’s first photo editor, would feverishly dig in the crates to decide which photographer we would celebrate each issue. We featured about six greats in every issue, one of them being Oriol. In the selects for our second issue, there was a powerful image Oriol had shot at renowned tattoo artist Mr. Cartoon’s tattoo parlor, right after 50 got inked on his back. RESPECT. Art Director of the time, Adam Levite, along with Berman, Ex and I determined that we would use that 50 image as the cover, scrap the interview and instead convert the cover story to an interview with the photographer. RESPECT. was the only hip-hop magazine ever to do this — celebrate a photographer on its cover. RESPECT. was the Life magazine of rap culture. Oriol was a part of RESPECT. setting itself apart in the history of Hip-Hop magazine publishing, being the first true fine-art publication of its kind. For the 10th issue of RESPECT., Oriol also donned the cover with his incredible shot of Brian “Baby” Williams.

Tay Keith: The Platinum Guru

In addition to his hometown peers, Grammy-nominated producer Tay Keith has helped to raise the bar within Memphis’ long-standing music scene. A lot of people from the city can vouch; he has single-handedly provided the soundscapes for some of your favorite hits within the last couple of years, from assisting with BlocBoy JB’s “shoot” phenomenon to contributing to Drake’s “Nonstop” reign over Hip-Hop. In 2019 (and beyond), Tay Keith continues to provide a fresh, unique platform for everyone to vibe to.

A Middle Tennessee State University graduate, Tay’s successes are making people understand just how important Memphis is to the culture. The most eccentric thing about the young “SICKO MODE” producer is his “less is more” approach to creating music; his beats both dwell in simplicity and diversity, a new wave all his own. As a product of the self-proclaimed ‘Grind City’, Tay follows a list of Hip-Hop pioneers: we have to pay respects to legendary greats like Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG, who have themselves paved the way for the likes of Yo Gotti, Young Dolph and Moneybagg Yo. Now (alongside BlocBoy JB), Tay Keith sits comfortably amongst the aforementioned frontrunners, making his city and the world proud and more aware of what Memphis has to offer. He’s been “f***[in’] these n***as up,” indeed.

RESPECT. recently caught up with Tay Keith, who talked about his achievements, the record that became his big break, remaking “Before I Let Go,” his company Drumatized and more.
