New York is known as the capital of hip hop. Many creatives grow a passion for music at a young age. Ovi Jozi, is a twenty two year old multi-talented artist from Newburgh, New York.
Growing up in a Haitian household, both of his parents were immigrants with humble beginnings. He began to make music as a hobby when he was a freshmen in high school. In 2018, he started to take it more serious by learning unique ways to perfect his craft. His love for the art of music constantly inspires him to reach new pinnacles.

Music is the foundation for his mood and energy. Heavily influenced by Kanye West, Biggie, Snoop, and Travis Scott, his ultimate goal is to make timeless music that is therapeutic to the soul, so any and every one can relate. His biggest accomplishment so far is having sold out shows with regular radio plays. Several different factors play into his creative process when making a record. He listens to over a hundred beats before he chooses one to freestyle on. Then he starts to write out his lyrics based what vibe the beat gives him. Remaining true to who he is differentiates him from many artist. He is known for his insightful lyrics that make him relatable.

Ovi shares his new track titled, “Demonz.” It features MC the Greatest, where they both speak about being intune with their spirtual side. They also wanted to create a record that people can vibe and turn up to. With his melodic and deep sound he strives to create songs that make you feel good.

2020 has been such an awakening year for the black community. With the recent unfortunate events it has become more of a challenge to raise our black men. Doley Bernays shares his personal experience in new three pack titled, “Hard Raising Black Boys.”

In the first record, “Deaths Going Viral” Bernay’s speaks about risking his freedom just to survive. The struggle of knowing that the police can take his life due to the color of his skin or by people around him with the same skin color.

“America might kill me as far as I know/ I’ve been risking freedom for survival/ Gotta keep a gun where I go/ Not tryna get killed by the cops or killed by my ops”

The next track, speaks for itself, “Hard Raising Black Boys.” It is a obstacle many black parents must overcome. Raising a black son of his own has opened his eyes to our harsh reality. Trying to teach him certain experiences that only life can show you. Bernays also relates to how difficult it is to witness black mothers continuously bury their children.

“I see a black momma that’s crying/ I hear sirens, black Boys are dying/ I see a black mother that’s crying I feel like crying but ima hold it in/ two weeks later another mom on the news here we go again”

“So Far From Home” closes out the pack with a soulful vibe. The Bronx emcee explains how he can be so close to home but yet feel so far way. He explains wanting the best for his son so he doesn’t make the mistakes he made.

“Don’t want him in the trap house serving addicts like his daddy/ I don’t really want for my junior/ my momma really ain’t want that for me but it still grabbed me……I’m tryna raise a King, not a savage. “

During tough times, many rely on Bernay’s music to comfort them. It gives them hope and some understanding to what’s going on around them. Doley let his heart bleed through the entire project. His music is like a time machine that carries your emotions. You become attached to the lyrics the more you listen. He displays more layers of his personality to explain why it is so hard to raise black men.

OKQ is from the bottom. He is well known in his community and slowly rising to heights he never expected. Not only within the rap world, he’s also shedding light on the world he comes from. His story can not be compared to many, at the age of 26 he has been through more pain than people twice his age. He grew up in the streets and in a group home. OKQ has decided he wants to shape the world in his image. He favorite quote is ” even though I grew up unfortunate & without a big family or father, I want to show people that don’t determine your outcome in life”. We had a chance go cath up with OKQ for an exclusive interview.

Interview

Who Is OKQ?

OKQ is a real one from the streets of Stone Mountain GA. He’s all about modesty and being yourself no matter the situation. Im all about genuine stuff being real getting respect for not ever changing up on what I believe. Ya feel me ? I want to be the person who shows people you can be cool and still do what you like. Don’t think cuz you like something different from everybody else that makes u less a of a man. Naw enjoy it be great at what your passionate about!

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia who did you see yourself becoming?

I honestly always saw myself becoming OKQ and no one else. I knew I had a message to get across to my people. Only I could spread it, because nobody is willing to take the heat of being different. But I am!

Who were your influences?

Growing up its hard to say who influenced me because everything wasn’t so accessible. I would definitely say I was more inspired by the older crowds. And now that I’m older I get a lot of inspiration from Jcole , Joyner Lucas , Kendrick Lamar & My Artist Sleepy Headd.

How did u first get introduced to HipHop/Rap?

I mean honestly it kind of just happened I always knew I had a voice I just never knew how to get it to everyone. My bro Gwalla Man Dash was rapping at the time and I was kind of always just backing him up. Then one day I was thinking maybe I should give it a shot. A lot of people won’t understand me because I’m so diverse but I believed it was worth try.

What new projects are you working on?

Currently I just dropped a crazy video called Home Invasion. I have a single out Titled Trap Friends Ft Sleepy Headd. Im planning on releasing a new mixtape later on this year as well as many new songs & videos. For now I’m just mastering my craft perfecting greatness.

What does the word respect mean to you?

Without respect we wouldn’t be able to define different people. Respect is everything to me. I gotta few homies who passed who made sure they died with their respect. No matter how much money you got if nobody respects you when its all gone it was worth nothing. I feel respect goes way longer than a dollar bill.

You can follow OKQ on Twitter here or check him out on Instagram below.

The PressPlay Agency curates an ‘UP NEXT’ playlist which creates a dope opportunity for new artists to get heard by the people who matter most. Unlike other playlists, we’ve got the ear of the industry: our primary audience is made up of real artists, A&Rs, label execs, and music industry professionals that tune in to our playlists to find the next hot thing.

Buttah Niia is a rapper born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Brownsville… and she sounds like it! Between her distinctive voice, hard-hitting NY flow, and soulful samples, Niia could be the female rapper we’ve been waiting for. She’s performed at NY’s famous SOBs twice, at “Faces in the Crowd” and the “Major Stage” show. Her single “Gotta” was also featured on the Hot 97 Take It to The Street Vol. 2 mixtape. Her latest project Set it Off: Stony Edition is the follow up to her debut mixtape, Set it Off: Frankie Story. The project features, “Eastside Girl,” a bar-filled female anthem for ladies that live on the right side of the map. Also off the project, the track “Timeline” gives a more introspective look at her story over a soulful piano beat.’

Buttah’s timeless bars and classic feel are a refreshing departure from the current sound, and continues to captivate listeners. Definitely excited to see what’s coming from Buttah Niia and her buttah smooth flow. Make sure you grab her new project, Set it Off: Stony Edition to hear her set it off.

Cedric Brazle (pronounced Brazil) is a Miami-based singer-songwriter using music to express his life, thoughts, and past experiences. Super strong vocals, a classic R&B feel, and modern 808 production gives Cedric an interesting, “young Usher-in-2020” vibe. His single “Body Heat” is a sultry uptempo vibe narrating a night of ignoring exes, hitting clubs, and finding the company of someone new. With three strong introductory singles out, Cedric is gearing up to release his first project. Be on the lookout for a Cedric Brazle EP this summer – it’s been a while since you’ve heard an R&B record like this!

Carl Taylor, professionally known as C-4, is an exciting new artist out of Jersey. A natural entertainer and gifted athlete, C-4 was born for the spotlight. In February of this year, C-4 came out of the gate hot with his first official single, “Takeoff.” “Takeoff” is a fun, upbeat anthem announcing his arrival on the scene – and listeners can’t help but sing along. He follows it up with high quality, Donjai-directed visuals and a stream of well-received, catchy singles including “Birdbox” and “I Might.” Coming up, C has a collab dropping with the next-hot-thing out of Queensbridge, artist Rover, followed by his debut project.
Astro Kyi is a rapper and songwriter from PG County, Maryland. Her unforgettable flow is as aggressive as it is smooth and melodic. A true girl’s girl, Kyi has no trouble mixing classy and savage – with the look to match! Heavily influenced by 90’s hip hop, Kyi is bringing golden era bars with a modern, feminine feel. Her latest single “Pint Size” is a hard-hitting, bassy record – and a reminder that she is not to be played with. She may come in a small package, but these bars and flow switches definitely do not. Be on the lookout for new singles dropping monthly, as well as new visuals from your favorite astronaut.

Originally from Puerto Rico and later Texas, Alondra Marie is a talented and soulful singer. Not only is she a beautiful and talented artist, she’s been an active duty service member since 2014. Alondra is currently finishing her last few months stationed in Japan – and we’re all thankful for her service! Amazingly, in 2019 during her deployment, she managed to drop a beautifully crafted 4-track R&B Ep titled Fruit. A departure from earlier work and in stark contrast with her dayjob, Fruit highlights her softer, sensual side. Alondra brings to the table sultry vocals, crisp production, and soulful vibes that feel both familiar and refreshing. Later this year, you can expect to see her follow up EP, fully written and produced by Alonda Marie herself.

WrittenInRome is the self proclaimed star from Newburgh Ny. He fell in love with music at the age of 15 and often found himself apart of freestyle cyphers that him and his friends would host in highschool. The now 22 year old star is on the rise with a captivating sound that blends both modern day melodic rap and the old school art of storytelling.

In his single ‘Boss Up’ WrittenInRome reflects on his darkest nights whereas he struggled with a 9-5 while close friends looked downed on him. Not to mention, the title “Boss Up” is a feeling he’s sure everyone can relate to. However, in ‘Remember Me’ he introduces us to the confident side of WrittenInRome while showing love to his city. Despite his braggadocious side Rome shows a heart-felt yet heartbroken emotion on ‘Love Gone’. With lyrics like “can you tell me where the love went … how am I suppose to go on if I’m not next to you”. “Love Gone” is one of those songs sure to put you in your feelings.

Rome spent much of 2019 doing shows all around NYC & showcasing his talent as a featured artist on other artists songs. He’s already gifted fans with 6 new singles to kick off 2020 and now is gearing up to release his long awaited debut project.

IG- @jvaanz
Canadian Singer-Songwriter Jvanz knew he wanted to make music from an early age. With limited resources in his small town Jvanz used YouTube to give himself music lessons to develop his distinctive voice and sound. By high school he started MoJo, a music partnership with his close friend Mohammed. Right when they began to see some traction as a musical act – Jvanz’s friend Mohammed tragically took his own life. As a result, he released a heartfelt track titled “1-800-263-4944” – which became his breakout track. From there, he released a stream of well received singles leading up to his debut EP Parallel, including “Delusional” – which peaked at No. 2 on the Audiomack Trending Charts and was featured on the Spotify Billboard in Times Square.

IG – @trucarr
TruCarr is a rising artist with a story to tell out of Watts, CA, home of TDE. Since dropping his first track at age 17, appropriately titled “Start Grindin” TruCarr has steadily been dropping new singles and visuals that shed light on his life growing up in LA. He saw gradual success until late 2019, when he dropped “Outside” – a distinctly west coast track that would quickly become TruCarr’s biggest song to date. Capitalizing on the song’s success, he followed it up with a new version featuring DaBoii of SOB x RBE – and later the “Outside Remix” featuring Blueface. In April of 2020, he dropped a track with G Perico titled “What I See” – a perfect pairing for a chilled out, LA vibe. Keep an eye out for the “What I See” video dropping soon, and a new project coming this summer.

From then, he’s dropped a number of singles in his melodic, autotune style including “Drugs,” “Green Eyes,” and “All Black.” The rappers’ most notable single, “Aqua,” even received radio time on Rochester radio. Coming next for Ovi is the release of his new project, and Ep titled “Black & Purple Hearts.”

The rise of a star is on the way. Meztheprod has exploded on the scene and he’s building a social following behind him. Fans love his way of bringing the truth to the music industry. Mez has set his heart on changing the way music is made while reviving the old sound of music. He is very mindful of what he reveals and may have quiet moments. Mez doesn’t need to say too much because his actions speak louder than his words. May people say that his works speak life into those who look up to him.

Early Life

Mez lived with his dad and learned the value of saving, sharing and a great deal of bed experiences. At 16 he ran away from his troubled home and began to find life in the streets of Washington D.C. Mez started to grab the tune for music from his father who was into music as well. Once on his own Mez began to take music more seriously than ever.

Despite the bad start, his work has grown over the years from rapping to creating beats. Meztheprod is now one of Washington D.C and New York City’s most sought out hip hop’s figures. He’s created beats and produced bread winning favorites for many well-known artists. M-ez has also worked with the likes of Stro The MC, Twista, Fred Da Godson, Chinx Drugs, Mr. Cheeks, Tony Sunshine and more!!

Power

Mez has been featured in 8 local & top magazines, including big publications such as Medium, Genius, 2dopeboyz, XXL, and many more. Meztheprod has a very big influence on social media. He helps artist step into the light offering production and opportunities. Mez also competes with getting his artist side out to the world with past mixtapes and albums. The album titled “Power” did exceptionally well with fans tuning in to the well-put together project. The single was titled after the album Power. Mez adds a high-appealing message with lyrics and an upscale visual of scenes from slavery to Obama our former president.

Illuminati

Mez also got his point across with the next song on the project titled Illuminati where he talks about the conspiracies around the so-called cult. The video shows Mez in a losing mental state of mind while talking to the downfall of being in a cult. Fast forward to 2015 Meztheprod released a highly received Beat. tape with 12 sample-driven beats to vibe to. This beat tape was also released by Coast To Coast Mixtapes which elevated the project.
Meztheprod has many accomplishments from helping artist see their dreams to working with legends in music. His new Beat tape which was released in 2019 titled “Good Sunday” has a new soulful vibe to it. His work has and will continue to grab the attention of those who look up to him as a role model for music and business. Mez is a force to be reckoned with. Hard times never stopped the future legend as they call him, and he has nothing but time to bring a breath of fresh air into the music world.

Love is love, says Mez, and he wishes that everyone can get the message of truth and longevity.
