MTV PUSH has named 22-year-old hip-hop artist Doechii as its featured Global PUSH Artist for the month of July. Doechii has been preparing for the spotlight ever since stepping into church as a young child where she requested a mic and sang in front of her first live audience. As a rising star in the industry, she is preparing to shake up the hip-hop world with her emotional and hypnotic sound that cannot be defined by just one genre. Doechii joins MTV Push to talk about the importance of being a businesswoman, her breakthrough song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” and plans to put Tampa on the map with her upcoming project.

On being the first female rapper signed to Kendrick Lamar’s label:
-
“The legacy is so important to me. I’m in a really beautiful position to where I am the first female rapper on TDE, so this particular legacy starts with me. Kendrick has opened up the doors as a man, but as a female rapper, I’m touching new spaces and fanbases for the label.”
How she got her start as a businesswoman:
-
“Before I was an artist, I was an entrepreneur. I sold silly bands in the 6th grade, I’m 100% hands-on with everything and as long as I’m being honest to that space that I’m in, I’m going to continue to push my message.”
How her mother inspired her:
-
“I matured with my mother. I watched her go through years of really bad relationships. She didn’t trust anybody or herself. I watched her get older and mature, transition and find her spirit. She’s my first example of what a woman is.”
