Timed to Pride Month and Black History Music Month, Sound Barrier: Sylvester will document the illustrious musical career and impact of the genre bending icon, Sylvester, including exclusive never heard before interviews, recordings, and demos from Sylvester himself.
The podcast takes listeners into the backstage battles, glamorous European discos, and the San Francsico neighborhood that was ground zero for the Gay Rights Movement. Sylvester refused to compromise his authentic self and paved the way for generations of intersectional artists to come. Episode 1 includes rare early recordings of Sylvester singing blues and jazz classics “Stormy Weather” and “God Bless the Child” in his “Miss Ruby Blue” persona, which he modeled after his idols, Lena Horne and Billie Holiday.
Confirmed guests this season include Patti LaBelle, Anita Pointer, Billy Porter, Mykki Blanco, Purple Disco Machine, Big Freedia, Bob the Drag Queen, Alex Newell, DJ Nicky Siano and more!
Embargoed episodes are available on Spotify’s early listening platform Review Vault. Feel free to register and we’ll work on getting you approved ASAP. You can also check out FTR’s interview with our host, Jason King!
Episode 1: A Night at the Opera
Episode 1 Description:
Sylvester moves from South Central LA to join a performance-art commune in San Francisco that’s mostly made up of white hippies in drag. But for Sylvester, being fabulous isn’t an outrageous game of dress-up. It’s for real — and so ultimately, he throws them under the bus.
