VH1 premiered the final chapter of the original digital docu-series “Growing Up Black,” an unfiltered and in-depth look at the differences in the Black experience from one city to the next across the country by interviewing locals, community members and leaders to explore issues like their personal experiences around systemic racism, what it is like growing up Black in America, and the feelings and experiences around the Black Lives Matter movement today. “Growing Up Black: Detroit” premieres on VH1 YouTube on Tuesday, October 26 at 4pm ET/1pm PT.
The final installment of the docu-series caps off with a deep dive into the spirit of Detroit and the fearlessness that all natives from the city are born with. Touching on various themes such as Detroit’s legendary music culture birthed at Motown Records, entrepreneurship, artistic creativity, Detroit vs. Everybody, gentrification and more, this last chapter depicts the grit, grind and hustle of Detroit while also highlighting the glitz and glam that the city has to offer. Featuring interviews with American poet and author Jessica Care More, rapper Payroll Giovanni, celebrity designer Brea Stinson, Tommey Walker, Founder of Detroit vs. Everybody, visual artist Sheefy McFly, Co-owner of Detroit Vegan Soul Erica Boyd and Founder of Twerk Tequila, Lauren McGrier, all sharing how the city of Detroit has impacted not only their personal journeys, but also how Detroit has influenced art and culture around the world.
