MTV announced today it will be re-airing “The Concert for New York City,” the legendary benefit concert held at Madison Square Garden in October 2001 to raise funds and to honor the first responders, survivors and victims of the September 11 attacks. The concert will re-air commercial-free on its 20th anniversary, on MTV Live and MTV Classic at 7pm ET on Wednesday, October 20th.
Originally broadcast live on VH1 and organized by Paul McCartney, this special encore will include fundraising elements built around performances and appearances by top stars including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, David Bowie, The WHO, Destiny’s Child, Jay-Z, Meg Ryan, Susan Sarandon, David Spade, Julia Stiles, Bon Jovi, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Macy Gray, Goo Goo Dolls, Melissa Etheridge, Jim Carrey, John Cusack and more.
Funds raised from the re-airing of the concert will be directed to Robin Hood, New York City’s largest poverty-fighting organization. Find out more information at RobinHood.org.
