The story continues next spring break when Afro Nation Puerto Rico makes its debut on US soil. Taking place across March 24-26 on the multi-award-winning beach of Balneario de Carolina, the festival reveals the first wave of talent across the three-days event, which includes headliners Megan Thee Stallion and Wizkid.
Three-time GRAMMY Award winning rap sensation and cultural icon, Megan Thee Stallion has seen a meteoric rise over the years. Earning two global record breaking Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits with the “Savage Remix” featuring Beyoncé, and “WAP” with Cardi B, and a critically acclaimed Gold certified debut album with Good News, the Houston rapper and philanthropist is an empowering force. Joining Megan at the top of the billing is Nigeria’s King of Afrobeats, Wizkid. A GRAMMY winner and platinum-selling sensation whose celebrated fourth studio album, Made in Lagos released in 2020 cemented him as the country’s greatest cultural ambassador and placed him at the vanguard of a global Afrobeats wave. His collaborations with Drake, Beyoncé, Skepta and Justin Bieber, plus his summer anthem “Essence” with fellow Afro Nation performer Tems dubbed by Rolling Stone as “The Song of the Summer”, shows his globally reaching influence.
The first festival of its kind, founded on good vibes and #BlackExcellence, Afro Nation Puerto Rico will also welcome dancehall superstar Shenseea, and reggae sensation Koffee, YBNL Nation signee British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Naira Marley, Nigerian reggae-dancehall artist Patoranking, boy wonder Rema, plus Tekno. Completing this phase of the lineup are Busiswa, Eddy Kenzo, Focalistic, King Promise, Omah Lay, Oxlade, Patrice Roberts, Ruger and Tems.
On the festival, founders SMADE and Obi Asika say “We’re excited to welcome locals and people from different races and cultures to the beautiful Balneario de Carolina in San Juan for Afro Nation Puerto Rico 2022 to celebrate Black and African music. As with all of our festivals around the world, our mission is to unify and uplift and this edition will be no different.”
Event Horizon’s Natasha Manley adds, “The ability to bring Afro Nation Puerto Rico to fruition is a special achievement, as it is our first event post-lockdown. After I joined the team in 2020, we were forced to cancel our show in Puerto Rico at the last minute, to the disappointment of the team. Afro Nation Puerto Rico 2022 is close to our hearts, as it is the culmination of the hard work and creativity of Event Horizon’s team to give the energy of Afrobeats back to a live audience. Gathering people together for the first time in over a year to celebrate the diaspora and support emerging artists is something we take great pride in.”
Across the 3-days, festival-goers will be able to call Balneario de Carolina (AKA Carolina Beach) home. With its spectacular white sand and beautifully clear, warm water, it’s no wonder it has won the Blue Flag Award for cleanliness and water quality for a number of consecutive years. Located near the Isla Verde, the palm tree-lined beach is one of the finest and favored in San Juan by locals and visitors alike, with attractions such as watersports, volleyball plus a water park close by for thrill-seekers looking for fun outside of the music performances.
Coming back stronger than ever, with even more line-ups yet to be revealed, the debut edition of Afro Nation Puerto Rico is set to make an immense impact on the U.S festival calendar next Spring 2022.
