Mike Anthony first met Yung Bleu through a friend, urged to listen to the then-rising rapper and singer’s music. Upon meeting the “You’re Mines Still” artist in person, the first thing Mike noticed was how ready he was to work. “[Bleu] didn’t waste time to tell me his goals, his plans,” Mike recalls of their first encounter.
That was 7 years ago. Now the CEO of MA Management and Yung Bleu’s longtime manager, Mike Anthony has a lot to say about breaking into the music industry and learning the music world’s physics by ear. Although Mike’s love for music goes back to his childhood, Bleu’s work was enough to convince him to dive into management headfirst. “The first day I met him, I felt like he was gonna be a star,” he remembers. While the talent was there, Mike remained hesitant about going down the music management route. “I didn’t know none about the music business,” he reflects. “Then Bleu was like, ‘Man, you got this. Let’s go.’”
The transition was tough at first, but Mike eventually found his footing, learning the ropes along the way. Now, Mike and Bleu are achieving their goals, an artist-manager duo putting on for their hometown of Mobile, Alabama in ways that no one has before. Looking back, he sees the challenges of navigating and understanding the game hands-on for better than for worse. “It’s really not no blueprint when it comes to the music business,” he says. “What might work for one [artist] might not work for another, so it’s really no right or wrong.” Indeed, a large part of Mike’s success is his understanding that learning along the way is key in the industry. His fluid management style was birthed out of those lessons, and his passion for music and faith in his team have only helped his artists grow and flourish.
When it comes to his next steps, Mike anticipates the launch of his own music publishing company, as well as Yung Bleu’s “Moon Boy” tour and upcoming album, set to be released soon. Moving forward, everything is about trust, especially with the success Mike and his artists have had and that will undoubtedly continue to come. That means having trust in his artists, and building trust and loyalty among his team. “I always let an artist find their own creative control,” he says. “My strategy is basically just supporting an artist. A great artist with support is gonna always put their all in it.”
