As part of a new initiative to rehabilitate public parks across New York City neighborhoods, global sportswear brand, Adidas has commissioned Harlem-based conceptual artist, Sean “Belchez” Cort to redesign the Black Gates basketball court in Harlem’s Foster Housing projects.
Located on 115th Street and Lenox Avenue, the new basketball court will feature bold, vibrant colors and broken chains, hand painted throughout by Belchez, himself. He hopes this will serve as a reminder to kids and young adults in the community to break free from the vices and setbacks that keep them captive in life.
Belchez, who lived in Foster projects for over 25 years, has taken on the task of completely revamping Black Gates over the last seven days. As a part-time school teacher, he has commissioned former students to assist him on the project while teaching them the importance of giving back to their communities. The project, which is completely funded by Adidas and is currently underway, is set to be unveiled this week.
