Rapper Pop Smoke, dubbed the new king of New York, combined gravelly vocals with erratic production to become the face and pioneer of Brooklyn’s rising drill scene. Within just a year of his debut, he made a rapid rise in the mainstream, only to be gunned down in his Los Angeles Airbnb in a tragic robbery on February 19, 2020.
Complex Subject: Pop Smoke is a six-episode series unpacking the life and death of Pop Smoke told by the people closest to him. This is the story of his whirlwind final months — a review of the legacy he left behind. The series premieres July 20th (which would have been the rapper’s 22nd birthday), with a full six-episode binge drop.
Additionally, timed to launch day, July 20 at 5:00 PM EST, Spotify’s Greenroom will be hosting a live conversation featuring DJ PVNCH, Danyel Smith, Shawn Setaro, and TT Torrez to discuss the life and legacy of Pop Smoke and celebrate his birthday.
