Mj Rodriguez stopped by MTV’s Fresh Out Live with host Jamila Mustafa to share her plans for celebrating Pride month this year, her new debut single “Something To Say,” and the iconic music industry legends she had the chance to work with recently, including Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White, and more. Rodriguez talks about how music was always her first passion before acting and now she has the opportunity to share her musical talents with the world. Plus, pop-group Now United delivers an energetic performance of their hit “Baila.”
On celebrating Pride month:
- “I’m probably just going to be going out on the town, enjoying my friends, seeing the people on the streets just enjoy themselves because of who they are and just live with them. It’s been a minute since I did that, so it’s time to do it now.”
On her new debut single “Something To Say”:
- “I fell in love with music ever since I was a child. That was my first passion and –crazy enough– acting swifted me away and I never got a chance to really delve into it like I wanted to. I went to school for music, I went to Berklee College of Music, I was a songwriter there. I just wanted to get that stepping stone into it and I finally did. Now, people get to see Michaela Jaé, they get to know who I am outside of Mj. I’m really happy about it, I’m very very happy about it.”
- “I think “Something To Say” is the perfect debut for me because it showcases the side of me that a lot of people didn’t get to see, and it also lets people know that I am an artist and I’ve been working on this for a long time. It’s time for me to have that moment for people to see that I’ve got the talent to sing, the talent to move and the talent to perform and make people happy. That’s what this song is, to make others happy, to let them know that they have a voice in this world, and that no one in the universe should ever be telling you that you don’t have the right to exist. We all got something to say and I’ll be the first to say it.”
