Reform LA Jails and #CancelTheContractAV release their latest original campaign video ‘Our AV: Retelling Our Past. Re-imagining Our Future.’ that features Antelope Valley community members coming together to share their experiences with law enforcement in their school district. This informative, moving video shares some of the stories of sheriffs on campus, and community members reimagining their community if money was to be invested in true community safety and other meaningful services rather than law enforcement. Students, alumni, teachers and parents in the AV collectively authentically share their views on policing in schools as well as their ideas on alternatives for spending $1.6 million currently spent on police in the Antelope Valley Union High School District.
The intention behind this video piece is for viewers to hear from people on the ground who are most directly impacted by this issue and have to deal with it on a consistent, daily basis, and to inspire people to go complete the #CancelTheContractAV survey on police in schools to share their voice, be heard, and get involved in this critical campaign.
These powerful real narratives featured in the video come from James, a teacher at Eastside High School, who shares his story of calling the campus security guard on a student who refused to go to class, alum of Eastside High School and parent in the community, Isabel Flax, who recalls being expelled from school for fighting her bullies and sent to a probationary school controlled mostly by police officers rather than counselors, and more stories from students, teachers and parents in the Antelope Valley.
“This needs to be a conversation with everyone involved,” said Highland High School Alum Giovanni Pope, in the video. “Not just public officials or politicians. Not just people who are in uniform. We need to involve everyone.”
