New England Patriots football star Julian Edelman today announced the launch of his first non-fungible token (NFTs) in collaboration with his partner creative company Superdigital, allowing fans to purchase limited, original digital art created in collaboration with the veteran receiver.
Beginning April 1, Edelman will roll out three different NFT collections combining moments from his career with his passion for pop culture. The collections will feature limited edition art inspired by classic comic books and trading cards.
“My team has always been pretty early in digital, I remember showing Tom (Brady) how Instagram works in the locker room”, laughs Julian Edelman, 3x Super Bowl Champion. “So when I told my friends I was getting into NFTs and they’re asking what it’s all about, I said we are just making cool stuff for the internet but with a new and super creative community. The NFTs we’re seeing out there are amazing and I’m hoping to learn a lot over the next few months as I roll out my own collectibles.”
With the rise in popularity of digital art and currency, the launch marks Edelman and Superdigital’s foray into NFTs. Superdigital began working with Edelman early in his career and helped develop JE11, a multi-million dollar merchandise brand serving Pats Nation and beyond. Edelman has amassed more than 6M followers and 100M social video views to date, and was the first athlete to launch with Instagram Shopping.
“I haven’t seen a space this exciting in a long time,” says Assaf Swissa, Founder and Creative Director at Superdigital. “Digital design has been an underrated art form and I’m glad it’s having this big moment on the world stage. I think we’ll see artists continue popping up and helping this community flourish. We’re all in on this.”
Edelman’s virtual auction will take place 7PM EST April 1, 2021, on OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace. Collectors will have the chance to bid on the individually numbered pieces and special edition 1-of-1 Edelman’s NFTs for up to 48 hours. Items at auction include:
Cryptomon Card Set: “Cryptomon” is an animated three card set inspired by the Japanese trading card craze of the last 25 years. Playing cards that feature three evolutions of Edelman as a squirrel type, based on the nickname given to him by his teammates. The collection consists of 30 individually numbered editions of each card, and three unique 1/1 holographic versions.
10% of proceeds are being donated to Stop AAPI Hate
Incredelman Comic Books: “Incredelman” is a set of 1990’s style motion-driven comic books inspired by key moments in Edelman’s life. The collection consists of 30 individually numbered editions of each comic book cover, and three unique editions including the “MVP Edition” illustrating Superbowl LIII; the “Comeback Edition” illustrating Superbowl LI; and the “Yalla Edition,” illustrating Super Bowl XLIX and nodding to a favorite Hebrew phrase of Edelman’s meaning “Let’s go.”
10% of proceeds of the “Yalla Edition” Incredelman Comic Book collection are being donated to Maccabi USA and are being earmarked to support the Israeli Baseball Club who qualified for Olympic play this year in Tokyo.
Users will be able to participate in the auction by bidding on the NFTs through OpenSea, with winning buyers claiming certified ownership of the tokens. Each piece is digitally authenticated and verified by Edelman.
“Julian and Superdigital are blending inspiration from comics, football, and Pokemon into a unique series of collectibles that appeal to multiple audiences. Their thoughtfulness and creativity is going to enrich the NFT space.” – added Alex Attallah, OpenSea Co-founder & CTO.
Each special edition NFT will also come with prizes such as: signed & framed physical art, Box seats to cheer Julian on, Game worn / used memorabilia and a few more surprises.
