The “Thong Song” was never meant for Sisqó, but once he heard the track he couldn’t let it go. Although the instrumental was originally intended for Michael Jackson, producers Tim & Bob were won over by Sisqo’s enthusiasm and fresh ideas. But Def Jam wasn’t sure that a song about thongs would sell and almost left it off the “Unleash The Dragon” album. On this episode of “The Story of”, VICE sat down with Sisqó and the creators of “Thong Song” to hear how G-strings and violin stings united to create this iconic song that brought thongs to the masses.
Sisqó shared the backstory of his infamous hit with VICE on an episode of VICE’s documentary series, “The Story of…where he discussed how everything came about and the story behind the song coming to life. G-strings and violin strings united to create this iconic song that brought thongs to the masses.
The “Thong Song” was originally released on February 15, 2000 as as the second single from Sisqó’s 1999 solo debut studio album Unleash the Dragon. The song garnered four Grammy nominations and numerous other awards peaking at #1 on the Billboard Rhythmic top 40 chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100, Sisqó’s second highest-peaking hit behind “Incomplete“.The song was written and produced by Sisqó, and Tim & Bob, the duo of Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson. Rapper Lil’ Kim was originally supposed to be included on the album version but declined.[4] However, Kim and Sisqó collaborated on her second album The Notorious K.I.M. a year later.
