Multi-platinum rapper, songwriter, and producer Russ releases the “Misunderstood” music video a week after the release of this latest single. This song was written with the people who continuously misunderstand him, his music, and his message in mind. In this ballad, Russ tells a story of how disappointing it is to have media and the industry continuously make assumptions about him based on framed soundbites & click bait titles, and simultaneously a lover failing to understand him despite all he has done to accurately reflect who he is.
The music video is a perfect visual representation of this song’s lyrics and the powerful meaning they hold. Russ is seen tied to a chair in an interrogation room where he is visited by paparazzi, ex-lovers, the anonymous hateful people on social media, and lastly himself. As more people visit, Russ shows the abuse and pain people’s words cause him across his face. In the end the only person who could save him and release him from his bounds is himself.
About the inspiration behind writing the track “It’s disappointing to hear how continuously people in the industry and world at whole have a skewed picture of me and they misunderstand me, almost by choice it seems. At the same time dealing with a personal relationship where I feel like she didn’t want to understand where I was coming from. In both respects feels like I’ve done all I can and then some to show all of me but it’s frustrating when people choose to only focus on a fragment of me.” – Russ
