Rapper Saweetie sat down with Tamar Braxton’s for the latest episode of her popular podcast ‘Under Construction.’ In this episode Saweetie discussed graduating college, chasing your dreams, advocating for yourself, how she’s changing the conversation around what a female rapper can be, and how one of her goals is to be a professor one day.
Below are some highlights from their conversation, for the full episode – please click here.
Saweetie on why she spoke out against her label after they prematurely released her single ‘Best Friends” featuring Doja Cat:
“I felt violated as an artist. But before I’m an artist, I’m a business woman. And at this point you’re playing with my business , you’re playing with my rollout, you’re playing with the relationship I have with the world and with my fans. So I just kind of disagreed with how…. It was handled very sloppy.”
“The reason why I did share that is because we need to speak up, so that’s my name on it, it’s my face, I handle the heat if people don’t f*ck with it. If there’s any negativity, which is cool, but criticize my top rated work, don’t criticize something that still needs to be polished. That was just a way of standing up for myself and I feel like women should always stand up for themselves, because we’re kinda taught to just be quiet and be polite. No, I’m gonna say what I need to say and y’all are going to listen and y’all are going to respect me.”
What people can expect from Saweetie’s upcoming album and how it’s a reflection of her multifaceted brand:
“I think it’s just a pretty bitch bible, at the end of the day. It’s fun, it’s game, it’s wisdom, it turns up but its boss, its business, it’s everything that makes me a multifaceted brand and woman. And I feel like that’s what’s great about the Icy Girl brand is yes I’m a college grad, yes I’m a business woman, but I do have a love life, me and my man do get busy in the bedroom, I do have my homegirls who I turn up with. The issue with women in rap is that they always try to pigeonhole us into this box. Is she a conscious? Is she ratchet? Is she nasty? Is she classy? But it’s just like why can’t I just be all of that? I’m a human though. What’s unrealistic is for me to be one thing, because I’m a human being.”
“Hopefully when I break these glass ceilings of what people think a female rappers should be it lets the other girls know that, ‘hey you don’t have to boxed in, you don’t have to talk about one thing all the time.’
Saweetie on how talking about college, she and Megan Thee Stallion are changing the discourse on what it means to be a female rapper, and why it’s important to tell her college story:
“By me sharing my story, I’m letting other girls know that you can still chase your wildest dreams, and still go to college. I just feel like we don’t talk about it that much because there’s no one who has done it. So it’s great for people like Meg (Thee Stallion), people like me to talk about it because the people who are looking up to us just know that ‘hey this is another avenue, or another journey you can take.”
On how J. Cole inspired Saweetie to not drop out of college and why she shares her own story:
“The reason why I do discuss my story is because I remember I was going to college and I remember I wanted to drop out, but one of my favorite artists at the time was J. Cole and because he went to school I was like ‘okay, you can do both.’”
Saweetie on how she learned from her parents to stay out of the drama:
“My parents always taught me ‘just mind your business.’ I don’t know it’s just how I was raised. I can’t even tell you why I do it. My parents are about their business. If they’re in some business they’re gonna handle it. But If not, then they mind their own business. So I think I just have two dope, great, boss, ass mom and dad who handled their shit and were never in anyone else’s shit.”
