Atlanta rapper J.I.D has dropped a new song and video called “Skegee” earlier today. Set in, and inspired by Tuskegee, Alabama, the song touches on the atrocious Syphilis Experiments that took place in the Southern city in the 1930s. Moved to pen the song amidst the current healthcare inequities that face Black communities, J.I.D masterfully weaves his words against a beat produced by longtime collaborator Christo. The song also features words from the former mayor of Tuskegee, Ronald D. Williams. Co-directed by J.I.D and Michael Kelly (Parallel Agency) the accompanying visual shows J.I.D travelling across Tuskagee, AL meeting with its residents and the former mayor’s family. “Skegee” comes at the heels of J.I.D’s recent collaborations including a track with Masego and Rapsody for the film Judas & The Black Messiah as well as track on Dua Lipa’s deluxe album Future Nostalgia (The Moonlight Edition). Fans won’t have to wait long for more J.I.D as the artist has already hinted at his next project — the follow up to DiCaprio 2 (2018) and The Never Story (2017).
