The cast of the hit series “grown-ish” stopped by MTV’s “Fresh Out Live” to chat with host Jamila Mustafa about the show’s next chapter, which premiered its third season last night. Stars Chloe and Halle Bailey, Francia Raisa and Emily Arlook chat about the show’s heavy influence of music, entertainment and culture, plus tackling social issues in-show and all the new “tea” this season brings.

Chloe Bailey [“Jazz”] on the closeness and dynamic of the cast:
“We’re all so close and so chill. I really love how we all bring something so special to the table on our own, and then when we come together it’s like the cast of Grow-nish. I’m just really happy to be a part of it and to meet more and more incredible people.”
Francia Raisa [“Ana”] on Season 3 touching on current issues, social justice and politics:
“It’s interesting because we shot the show pre-pandemic and it’s ironic some of the stuff that happens in the show, that kind of happened in 2020. I don’t know how sometimes writers do that. It’s like they predict the future. I know for my character, she’s big on voting and she even starts a voter drive. We definitely touch a little more on what’s happening currently, pre-pandemic. It’s crazy how it blends in together.”
Emily Arlook [“Nomi”] on the importance of music within the show:
“I feel like music is another character on the show. Even in the scripts, all of the music cues are included in the descriptions and it’s totally another character. It sets the tone, it feeds the emotion of the scene and it makes a huge difference on the way any scene kind of hits the audience.”
Emily Arlook on her role as “Nomi,” a college student and mother:
“It was a cool storyline to get to play out on the show and I think totally relevant to what a lot of young women experience in college. To shed a little bit of light on what that might be like for someone, in this case, Nomi, was a good thing for me to get to do.”
