After years of community advocacy to expose civil rights abuses by the LA County Sheriff Department, the CA Attorney General has launched a Civil Rights investigation citing “serious concerns” that “legitimate policing practices have lapsed” and to determine if the LA County Sheriff “has violated the law or the rights of the people of Los Angeles County.”
This happened only a day after Sheriff Villanueva reported to the Civilian Oversight Commission, by threat of a subpoena, where he continued to fail to provide transparency and accountability to Angelenos as to the COVID-19 pandemic. At one point he said his response in the jails has been “nothing short of a miracle.” Meanwhile, from violating mask mandates to being involved in unresolved shootings, Sheriff deputy gangs continue to run rampant throughout our community.
Mariela Alburgues, Reform LA Jails Director of Implementation, issued the following statement in response:
“We applaud the Civil Rights investigation launched by the Attorney General. It is long overdue, but welcome considering the rogue antics this Sheriff has spearheaded throughout his tenure. We continue to call for Sheriff Villanueva’s resignation for the sake and safety of our communities. We cannot stand idly by while Sheriff Villanueva overreaches his authority and fails to hold his own deputies accountable for breaking the law.”
Reform L.A. Jails represents a coalition of citizens, community leaders, businesses, and organizations fighting to permanently reduce the population of people cycling in and out of jail. That starts with recognizing how mental health, drug dependency, or chronic homelessness issues are exacerbated by incarceration. As COVID-19 bears down on our County Jails, endangering the lives of thousands of Angelenos, it’s more important than ever that we demand care, not cages.
