NFL and its Inspire Change social justice initiative, aimed to move us toward a more equal and just tomorrow by reducing barriers to opportunity.
This past weekend, Say their Stories – a season-long NFL initiative to continue the theme of social justice and raising awareness of systemic racism that has resonated throughout the nation, and enact fundamental change by amplifying the names and stories of victims of police brutality through player voices to drive the narrative forward – premiered a new PSA focused on Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, a 45-year-old mother, speech pathologist and assistant pastor who was one of the nine victims of the 2015 Emanuel AME Church Shooting in Charleston, S.C. Houston Texans Pro Bowl WR Randall Cobb, who has worn Coleman-Singleton’s name on the back of his helmet this season, narrates the piece.
Over 1,400 players, coaches, and officials have chosen the name of a victim or a phrase like “It takes all of us” and “Black Lives Matter” to wear on helmet deals and/or custom cleats this season. Additional Say Their Stories PSAs include Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Julius Jones, and Alton Sterling. Below is a link to the full PSA and a quote from Cobb.
Randall Cobb PSA Excerpt from Sharonda Coleman-Singleton:
“I think of my mother. I think of my aunt. I think of my grandmother going to church and sitting in a Wednesday service. It’s in my mind, I feel like it will always be something that’s in my mind when these traumatic situations happen. Hearing Chris [Singleton] speak about that situation and his family’s ability to be able to forgive and to know that that’s what his mother would have done in that situation is very powerful. And if we can continue to push forward our lives could be a lot more cohesive.”
