This past weekend, Say their Stories – a season-long NFL initiative to continue the theme of social justice and raising awareness of systemic racism that has resonated throughout the nation, and enact fundamental change by amplifying the names and stories of victims of police brutality through player voices to drive the narrative forward – premiered a new PSA focused on George Floyd, whose May 25 death via police brutality in Minnesota spurred a national reckoning on race relations, and was a driving force behind the Black Lives Matter Movement. Black Lives Matter continues to gain fervor, and within the NFL, the movement has inspired players to take action in diminishing social injustice. Los Angeles Chargers’ Tackle Damion Square narrates the piece and elaborates on his decision to wear Floyd’s name on the back of his helmet this season.
Over 1,400 players, coaches, and officials have chosen the name of a victim or a phrase like “It takes all of us” and “Black Lives Matter” to wear on helmet deals and/or custom cleats this season. Additional Say Their Stories PSAs include Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Julius Jones, and Alton Sterling. Below is a link to the full PSA and a quote from Square.
Damion Square Excerpt from PSA on George Floyd:
I think [Floyd] will be remembered as the guy that put a spotlight on… things that people of color have been complaining about for years. You know, unfortunately he had to lose his life. He can’t be here to experience the change or the impact that he created. If I had one wish, I would wish that he could experience this change. He will be remembered for that. He’ll be the guy that got people to get up to vote. He will be the guy that got people to stop talking and [start] doing. That’s who he will be remembered as the guy that got people up off their butts to stop complaining, start marching, start holding people accountable.”
