Today, eBay is announcing the launch of a new sneaker authentication program on the marketplace. The new service launches this month with initial authentication by an independent team of industry experts, starting with the most popular sneaker styles and brands on the marketplace, and ultimately will grow to include all $100+ sneaker sales by 2021.
Authentication is at the heart of the entire resale industry – huge for eBay and others (watches, collectibles, for example). As you are likely aware, this is the second move for eBay in as many months; the marketplace announced authentication on all watches over $2000 in September.
Program details below.
- Proof of Authentication: Authenticator confirms consistency with listing; conducts physical inspection. An eBay tag is attached to the sneakers upon authentication.
- Third-Party Authentication: eBay partnered with SneakerCon to connect with top authenticators and utilize a comprehensive checklist of product specifications.
- Verified Returns: If a seller chooses to offer returns, the returned item goes through the authentication center to ensure the exact item sold is being returned to the seller in its original condition.
