This week, MTV News launched the latest roundtable discussion in the “Sound On” series moderated by correspondents Yoonj Kim and Dometi Pongo. Kim and Pongo led a conversation with panelists Kimberly Drew, Frank Waln, Raquel Willis, Tyree Boyd-Pates, Sara Mora, Kimmy Yam, and Andy Lalwani about their experiences as BIPOC, in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter movement. They discuss the framework of race and identity in America, Anti-Blackness and the existing tensions between minority communities, the model minority myth, and the path forward. The full discussion is up now on MTV Impact YouTube and also will be living across MTV News socials including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Raquel Willis on the intersection of issues and collective liberation:
“When I’m talking about Black trans power and Black trans liberation, that is a liberation that everyone is bound up in. There’s such a richness of complexity of gender in Black and brown cultures around the world that was demolished by colonialism and white supremacy and capitalism, so we have to be having a real conversation about the fact that a lot of what we are talking about is not completely new, a lot of it is ancient.”
Tyree Boyd-Pates on the allyship between minority communities:
“In all of these scenarios that we’re talking about, historical and contemporary, Black folks have continued to be the scapegoat for all of these communities. Outside of the indigenous communities, in respect to the political acts and the things that have occurred, real allyship looks like being accomplices and making sure that these model minority communities address their own anti-Blackness first, before the instances of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor occur.”
“Sound On” is MTV News’ roundtable series which explores the experiences, complexities, and unheard stories of young people in America today.
