The #FreeTianna Coalition, powered by the Black Strategy Fund, was brought together to bring more awareness and amplify this local injustice in San Luis Obispo in a national effort to put pressure on the DA, hold the police accountable, and ultimately have them drop the charges against Tianna Arata. The coalition sees this as the SLO County District Attorney and SLO PD using the arrest of Tianna as a political statement to try and suppress the First Amendment right to protest, so they stand in unity with Tianna to demand the charges be dropped.
WHO: On July 21st, during a peaceful protest demanding justice for George Floyd, 20-year-old BLM organizer and freedom fighter, Tianna, was arrested by San Luis Obispo police on criminal charges for exercising her First Amendment rights. #FREETIANA started trending on Twitter and details emerged about what happened with serious questions being raised about the violation of her rights–she is currently facing recommended criminal charges that could land her in prison for up to 15 years. Read more about her story here.

Matters (Responsibility, Action, Compassion, Education), Grassroots Law Project, Every Nigga is a Star, Don’t Shoot PDX – A Community Action Plan, Until Freedom, Reform LA Jails, and Essie Justice Group.

HOW TO HELP: While the police abused their power in arresting Tianna, only the District Attorney has the full power to file charges, so the ways in which the nation can show up and support Tianna alongside the coalition is simple, urgent, and necessary.
