Champion® Athleticwear and MTV are launching a limited-edition clothing collection, Champion X MTV.
Champion combined its classic streetwear designs with MTV’s 90’s aesthetic to celebrate the styles of hip-hop’s past that inspire the fashions of the future. The collection features iconic styles from men’s crewneck shirts, tanks, and jackets to women’s bodycon dresses and onesies. These new designs payed tribute to Champion and MTV’s influence in 90’s street style and hip-hop culture through iconic prints, retro looks and bright colors reminiscent of the time rappers went from musicians to style icons.
They highlighted the profound influence that the network and Champion had on the next generation of artists, Champion and MTV have enlisted iconic rapper Jadakiss, who has had a profound impact on both the music and fashion industries, to showcase the capsule collection.
“There’s not many brands that make you automatically think iconic, but Champion and MTV are exactly that,” said Jadakiss. “Coming up in the hip-hop scene, and till this day, you got to always look your best. Champion was one of those brands you could throw on and look and feel your best no matter the occasion. This MTV and Champion collaboration makes sense cause of what they mean to the culture.”
The collection ranges from $30 – 80 in both men’s and women’s pieces and is available at Champion.com, MTVShop.com, FootLocker.com, FinishLine.com, Eastbay.com, ChampsSports.com, JimmyJazz.com and Nordstrom.com.
We got a chance to speak with David Robertson, Director of Champion Global Brand Marketing to talk about the brand’s latest limited edition capsule collection with MTV. Find out where the idea came about for the collection + much more below.
How much did hip-hop inspire fashion in the 90’s?
“Hip-hop played a significant role in dictating major pop culture and fashion trends during the 90’s,” said David Robertson, Director Champion Global Brand Marketing. “It was an art that defied societal norms. This was not only reflected in artists’ content, but also how they dressed. Hip-hop’s boldness, rawness and ruggedness resonated with youth who often set fashion trends given our country’s obsession with the young.”
What impact do you feel MTV had on hip-hop becoming a much bigger genre?
“MTV helped hip-hop become mainstream. Yo! MTV Raps was the first hip-hop music show on the network, which provided global exposure to artists of the genre. For more than three decades, the network has provided a platform for hip-hop to be admired, appreciated and celebrated in every corner of the globe.”
How did the MTV 90’s aesthetic idea come about to help celebrate and launch the clothing collection?
“Both Champion and MTV have been influential brands within the hip-hop community for some time with a mystique for the 90’s era consumer. We partnered with MTV to create a collection that spoke to the authenticity of our brands, as well as our mutual respect and admiration for hip-hop culture. As Champion was a staple in the apparel space and MTV was the biggest platform for music at the same time, it made perfect sense to partner on a nostalgic collection that pays tribute to the intersection of fashion and music.”
Why did you guys choose Jadakiss to showcase the collection?
“MTV proposed the idea of partnering with Jadakiss and we thought the legendary MC was the perfect fit to represent the launch of this collection,” said Robertson. “As a 90’s artist whose music has spanned decades, Jadakiss represents what hip-hop was then and now. This bode well for our collection which celebrates the styles of hip-hop’s past that continue to inspire fashions of today. Both our collection and Jadakiss, represent hip-hop’s impact on culture.”
Could we possibly see another collection such as this one in the near future?
“It’s always possible. As a brand, we’re always looking to bring new, fresh and trend-setting apparel into the hands of our fans,” said Robertson. “We have some exciting collections set to launch in the next few months, so we encourage people to follow us on Instagram and regularly visit Champion.com for our latest collections.”
Which piece from the collection is your favorite?
“It’s hard to pick one, but I am a big fan of our color block woven jogging set,” said Robertson. “It has the bright neon geometric shapes that were trendy in the 90’s with a modern twist. It’s a nostalgic and head-turning piece that really makes a stylish statement.”
