Today the Movement for Black Lives introduced an omnibus bill called The BREATHE Act. In response to the national and global uprisings denouncing police violence and in defense of the dignity and respect of Black lives, this piece of legislation is being unveiled to transform and redefine how the United States envisions safety.
Championed by Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), this federal bill aims to reinvision community safety and an economy of care at a national level by introducing the following:
Divest federal resources from incarceration and policing
End criminal legal system harms
Invest in new approaches to community safety utilizing state incentives
Allocate new money to build healthy, sustainable & equitable communities for all people
Hold political leaders accountable & enhance self-determination of Black Communities
For over 42 days, millions across the country and world continue to take to the streets to demand an end to police violence and issue calls to radically transform the current criminal justice system from incarceration and criminalization to safety and respect for all.
Patrisse Cullors, Chair of Reform LA Jails, issued the following statement:
Too many Black lives have been lost to state-sanctioned violence. Finally, we have a
federal bill that reflects our beliefs, our needs, and the future we want to see in our communities.
I am proud to be part of the team that drafted a strategic and visionary modern-day Civil Rights Act. We must pass The BREATHE Act and ensure this transformative moment is set in stone.
We call on all our partners and allies to fight for our ability to BREATHE. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Andres Guardado and countless others will not be in vain.
