Critically lauded, GRAMMY Award®-winning rapper, singer and producer BEAM shares a special NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert at home today.
The visually and sonically stunning performance includes a trio of songs taken from his debut EP 95—”SOLDIER,” “MAD GAAL” and “STRANDED.” The set concludes with the tour-de-force debut of a brand-new, in the works song entitled “KUMBAYA” that truly speaks to the times.
95 was released in the Fall of 2019 and has cemented the artist’s status as one of the most exciting new voices in music today. NPR praised the project, naming it one of Heat Check’s “favorite discoveries of 2019” and a Music Staff Picks: Best Albums Of 2019, while exclaiming that he “effectively hops around the globe, borrowing from dancehall, trap, lo-fi and boom-bap.” The 10 tracks showcase a masterful songwriter and producer who takes the idea of genre, obliterates it, and builds something new. BEAM effortlessly switches between Jamaican Patois and English, and rapping and singing, with an intoxicatingly robust and adaptable voice. The result is jarring-yet-melodic, a direct-yet-diverse cohesion of colors and textures. The project has gone on to receive attention from the likes of The FADER, COLORS (with a performance of “2×2”), Highsnobiety, Hypebeast, New York Magazine, Clash, The FACE, LA Weekly and more, with publications like Pigeons and Planes and British GQ touting him as a 2020 Artist to Watch. BEAM stands for “Be Everything And More.” The artist most certainly lives up to the promise of his moniker. As the son of Reggae and Dancehall legend Papa San, music has been in his blood since birth. After immigrating from Kingston, Jamaica to South Florida as a young child, he grew up in the studio. Naturally, he became a songwriting and beatsmith maverick, placing his first production credits as a teenager. BEAM has done production and songwriting work for everyone from 21 Savage to 2 Chainz, Yo Gotti and Lecrae, whose album Gravity won the 2013 GRAMMY Award® for Best Gospel Album. Over the past year, he has lent his skills to collaborative tracks like “Mumbai Power” from Skrillex’s 2019 Show Tracks and appeared alongside Anitta and MC Lan on Major Lazer’s recent “Rave De Favela,” among others. Next up, BEAM is readying new solo material for later this year.
