Grammy-nominated rapper Lil Baby made a special appearance on MTV’s “Fresh Out Live” today, hitting the stage alongside host Sway Calloway to discuss his new album “My Turn” and working with Lil Wayne on “Forever.” The chart-topper also discussed returning to high school after dropping out to get his GED and starting a scholarship fund with $150k.
Additionally, Lil Wayne boarded a yacht in Miami, FL with host Jamila Mustafa to share a preview of his new music video, “Mama Mia,” and discussed the legacy of the late Kobe Bryant after paying homage to the basketball legend with a 24-second tribute on his latest album, “Funeral.”
On being compared to Lil Wayne and nervousness to meet him:
- “I’m definitely honored! That’s the perfect word for it. Even if it’s far-fetched to somebody, but just for more than one person to compare me to somebody like him I’m definitely honored and it makes me want to go harder.”
- “See I’ve [gotten] over the nervous thing, but he’s the only rapper when I did meet him, I was kinda nervous. Everybody else I meet, I don’t really be too fazed, but with Wayne I definitely was kind of nervous.”
On the importance of obtaining his GED:
- “[It was] definitely important to get my GED. I needed that to open certain doors for me. If I had never got that, certain doors wouldn’t be open for me. I don’t really like to speak on it like this, but with my sentence in prison, because I had a GED it was like a lesser sentence.”
On being influenced by Young Thug and Lil Yachty:
- “I think that I picked up a whole lot from them. Just by being around them. I watched them and the way they worked, how they freestyle, how they didn’t write anything down. I guess through my instinct, from being around them for so long, I automatically picked up from it.”
On donating $150K to jumpstart the “My Turn” scholarship fund:
- I could’ve donated to anything.. But [donating] to the school, to me, that’s the best way. I got a better chance of knowing it’s going to the right place versus a charity. With a scholarship, I can see where my money is going.”
MTV’s “Fresh Out Live” is a new short-form music series that delivers the most important music and pop culture news of the week directly to fans, including artist interviews, in-studio performances, album drops and tour announcements every Friday at 5PM ET/PT on MTV.
