Last year, Stephen and Ayesha Curry started their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation in the fight to end childhood hunger. Their foundation has taken on added purpose over the last few weeks due to COVID-19, as school closures, job disruptions, and lost wages are impacting millions of Americans’ access to food. To support people in need during this unprecedented time, the Currys’ foundation launched a Facebook fundraiser today for Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks committed to serving people in need, wherever they are.
According to Feeding America:
- 37 million people are food insecure, including 11 million children.
- 5.5 million seniors are food insecure.
- 22 million children qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
There are no fees to fundraise for nonprofits on Facebook, so 100% of the proceeds from this Facebook fundraiser will go to Feeding America and their support of people in need.
This fundraiser builds on the contribution Stephen and Ayesha made last week through their foundation to the Alameda County Community Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America Network, to help provide more than one million meals to children while schools are closed.
Recognizing the need to support food programs during this time, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and her fiancé, Tom Bernthal, supported the COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Feeding Families with their local food bank, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. The fund kicked off with a joint donation of $6M from Sheryl, Tom and a few of their friends in Silicon Valley. They’re also matching donations made through the Second Harvest of Silicon Valley Facebook fundraiser. These combined efforts have raised more than $7.3 million to date.
It also builds on Facebook’s commitment to match $20M in donations to COVID-19 relief efforts for the UN Foundation/World Health Organization and the CDC Foundation.
