Verizon Media today launched programming to celebrate Black History Month 2020 across its portfolio of media brands, building upon Verizon Media’s ongoing efforts to champion compelling content that provides a platform to important issues of our time and continues to offer perspectives of diverse voices within the Black community.
“At Verizon Media, we want to continue to be a trusted place that provides a platform for diverse perspectives. We feel we have the opportunity to play a crucial role and elevate stories in a meaningful way across our portfolio as we celebrate Black History Month,” said Guru Gowrappan, CEO of Verizon Media.
Programming across the portfolio includes:
-
HuffPost’s flagship multimedia project, Black Hair Defined, explores the cultural richness of Black hairstyles, traditions and products throughout the years in fun and creative ways. The digital hair museum features photos, video and illustrations that allow readers to feel the essence of Black hair — without actually touching it, of course.
-
HuffPost Politics will focus on the many definitions of what it means to be a Black voter in America today, with a spotlight on Columbia, South Carolina, ahead of the SC primaries at the end of the month. HuffPost Life will focus on the cuisine of Black chefs in America and what it means to carry on the culinary traditions of their ancestors today.
-
HuffPost will also host a “We Belong Here” Live Event on February 26, 2020, a panel discussion on the site’s South Carolina project moderated by HuffPost Editor-in-Chief Lydia Polgreen, followed by a panel discussion on the site’s Black Hair Defined project moderated by HuffPost Reporter Ja’han Jones and a “Share Your Hair” discussion.
-
RYOT, Verizon Media’s immersive production house, serves as the production partner on TIME’s groundbreaking immersive exhibit that recreates one of the most iconic moments in American history, the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The March will debut at the DuSable Museum Of African American History in Chicago, IL on February 28th.
-
Yahoo Finance will conduct a series of on-camera interviews with Black business leaders and entrepreneurs, including TIAA CEO Roger Ferguson and CEO of the luxury fashion holding company Tapestry, two of just four Black CEOs at Fortune 500 companies. Other high-profile interviews include Geoffrey Canada, a nationally recognized figure in education and president of the Harlem Children’s Zone. Yahoo Finance will also dig into the next generation of Black leaders by interviewing Marley Dias, the 15-year-old founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks. Reporters will also interview lesser known but important figures in business, including the 20-year-old founder of a hedge fund run by Black students, as well as one of the first Black women to work on Wall Street.
-
Yahoo Sports will focus on profiling standout Black leaders and pioneers in the sports community, including Pam Oliver, and examine how the major sports leagues hire and treat minority coaches.
-
BUILD by Yahoo will also host several events throughout the month to hear from community leaders including a special episode of the popular show “The X Change Rate” with Monet X Change guest hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob The Drag Queen with special guest Tia Mowry to discuss the importance of Black History Month amongst other topics.
-
In The Know will publish a profile focused on an up and coming member of the Black community each week including photographer Myles Loftin, R&B singer UMI, and songstress Baby Rose.
