Reverberating the brand’s gritty nocturnal glamour, there is a new depth of Neo-Noir from designer Marc Keiser, as he dives further down the rabbit hole beyond the symbolism of previous collections and draws from a personal narrative of sacrifice, love, and longing. This collection serves as both an ode to military heroes (who sacrifice for the protection of their nation, their way of life, their families) and a mereview moir of the home front (families and friends who long for the return of their loved ones). The color palette draws heavily from the desertscape of the Persian Gulf surrounding Camp Patriot Naval Base in Kuwait, where Keiser’s father served during the designer’s childhood. Utilitarian cuts from the Autumn/Winter 2020 collection were pulled from his father’s actual military uniforms. In the military, uniforms embody a commitment to the values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. These are the same values his father had etched on the dog tag around his neck during his entire active duty.
The same uniform that can symbolize so much heroism, can also evoke past remembrances of pain, of suffering, and longing. Like a cancer lurking in the shadows, those feelings and the dark places we go to with that fear, can consume each of us. We turn to fantastic stories, because these heroes inspire us, they offer us an escape – a hope, and a method of coping. It’s in those heroes we discover our own strengths and learn to rise.
“I think now more than ever we need a hero, this is my hero story,” says Marc Keiser, creative director and co-founder of Keiser Clark.
Set within Keiser’s favorite dark twisted fantasy and inspired by stories like The Matrix and Nicolas Winding Refn films, his collection features classic cuts glossed in a dark new age modernity. Key pieces include updated takes on the classic M65 fatigue, MA1 bomber, and peacoat jackets given superhuman resolve with black patent leather detailing. Further styles include a military dress-cut silk shirting in black, deep teal, and desert tan, a shadowy velour smokers suit with black patent piping, a mercurial black nylon tracksuit, graphic soft knits, and Keiser Clark’s signature Racer Denim given new life this season with black patent leather and up-cycled canvas from vintage World War II duffel bags.
