J Hus, the darling of UK Rap and the Afro-fusion pioneer scores his first NUMBER 1 in the U.K. for his sophomore album Big Conspiracy out now via Epic Records(US)/Black Butter Records. According to The OCC the album grabbed the top spot with 23,536 sales, with Eminem coming in second.
With features from Burna Boy and Koffee, Big Conspiracy is executively produced by JAE5 reuniting the electric duo once again to create magic. The combination of JAE5’s classic production style along with J Hus’ trademark rap flair and unmatched lyricism, both create what is set to undoubtedly be album of the year.
In usual Hus fashion, Big Conspiracy boasts an exuberant blend of Dancehall, Afrobeat, Rap, R&B and even Drill, an emotional rollercoaster ride exploring the inner thoughts and feelings of the East Londoner. The record establishes him as a cross territory leader. A king of the underdogs, who, across fourteen songs, dispenses with a reflective, lyrically sharp mission brief on himself, his state of mind and his navigational map for prevailing in a game of rigged odds.
Bringing together some of the most significant names in global music and masterful, career best production from close collaborators Jae5, Levi Lennox, iO who are also represented by 2k management, plus with the addition of TobiShyBoy, Nana Rogues, Skribz Riley and more.
The first two singles from the album, “Must Be” (his first Top 5 U.K. hit) and street track “No Denying” have both quickly become fan favorites and served as tasters for what was to follow. Big Conspiracy picks up where 2017’s Common Sense (the Gold selling, Mercury, BRIT, BET and MOBO Award nominated debut album) left off. The classic, cheeky and playful persona of the Hussla returns fusing a plethora of African tones and Jamaican patterns across the album. Vibrant tracks such as “Cucumber” and the Burna Boy assisted, Jae5, Nana Rogues and Skribz Riley produced track “Play Play” are heat wave anthems set to take over every single BBQ and party this summer, with Hus reminiscing on old crushes and current link-ups, slick-talking, like only he can.
With regard to guest features, joining Burna Boy, Jamaica’s current queen Koffee holds the verses of “Repeat” aloft. Newcomer Iceé tgm leads the album, providing the chorus and backing vocals on the albums first two tracks.
“Reckless” is arguably the album’s most anticipated moment – having been teased to fans on socials for just over a year now. On “Reckless” Hus confidently takes on the haters and showcases his supreme lyrical ability. Notably, on this album we see a more aware and conscious J Hus. After a well-documented fall from grace that included a stint in prison in early 2019, Hus studied up, became grown. The cheeky east Londoner introduced on songs like “Friendly” matured. As he elaborated to Wonderland in their 2019 cover story, “you’re gonna hear a more grown up Hus” on Big Conspiracy. “You’re gonna hear music with more meaning.”
The track “Love Peace & Prosperity” hints at Hus’ current world view. Closing track “Deeper Than Rap”, meanwhile, is an analysis of his life up to this point. A lyrical treatise on what he stands for, what he represents, it’s Hus at his most candid and politically poignant. It is to this album what “Spirit” was to the last and the end credits to the thirteen songs that have come before. Common Sense was Hus’ introduction, defining a sound – Big Conspiracy defines the mission. After securing the charts, the radio, the critics, it is the document of a singular artist expressing multitudes. With a greater emphasis on the words than ever before, this is a record where the music and the message do all the talking. The Fisherman might be nowhere to be seen, but he’s back, hustling for life’s top spot.
