Some might say that a jack of many trades is the master of none. Hannibal Buress would probably tell those people to shut up. Following a dizzying 2019 that included live tour dates, major motion film and TV appearances, philanthropic efforts, a music and comedy festival launch….and the occasional troll on social media, Hannibal Buress shares a slew of news announcements today in anticipation of his appearance at tonight’s NBA All-Star Celebrity Game Presented By Ruffles in Chicago. Buress will join in on his hometown fun, playing with Team Wilbon, captained by three-time Grammy® Award winner, Oscar winner and Chicago native Common, alongside teammates Bad Bunny, Kane Brown, Jon Batiste, Alex Moffat and Chef José Andrés. Opposing Team Stephen A., led by team captain and three-time Grammy® Award winner and Chicago native Chance The Rapper features 2018 Celebrity Game MVP Quavo, Taylor Bennett, LaRoyce Hawkins, Anthony “Spice” Adams, Marc Lasry, and Ronnie 2K and assistant coach Guy Fieri. Tune in to ESPN this Friday, February 14th at 7 p.m. ET to watch live.
Earlier today, Buress shared a behind the scenes look at his basketball training, leading up to this historic moment. The footage is backed by a new Buress-produced track “We’re Playing Baskeball Remix” feat. Ron Lamont & Emmaharu that also features the quadruple-threat laying down bars on what just might be the new NBA theme-song. This remix follows closely on the heels of Buress’ other recent track “Hannibal’s Hands All-Star Juke Remix”. Listen to both at links below.
On Saturday, Melvina Masterminds, the Chicago-based community center located in Buress’ hometown neighborhood of Austin, will sponsor the All-Star Pitch Competition from 11AM – 1PM in Amundsen Park. The competition is aimed towards local entrepreneurs and start-ups and is open to anyone ages 13 and over, giving anyone who might face structural barriers an opportunity to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges for cash prizes. The pitch competition is part of a series of pop-ups that Melvina Masterminds is hosting as the nonprofit develops its science, technology, and arts community center in North Austin. Previous pop-ups have focused on coding, robotics and 3D printing. Read more at Block Club Chicago and RSVP @ melvinamasterminds.com
In late 2019, Buress launched the inaugural three-day comedy and music festival, Isola Fest. Located in rural Mississippi and with a population hovering around 800, the tiny town of Isola literally gets it’s name from the word “isolation” and is the unexpected host to Buress’ gathering of great talents in music and comedy. Isola Fest 2 will take place at Playaz Palace on on May 22nd through May 24th, with further details to be announced soon.
Over recent months, Buress has been touting his visually ground-breaking new comedy special, Miami Nights, which will make another festival appearance in March at SXSW in Austin, Texas – more details to be revealed soon !
