Weekly Rap Gods has premiered a new video from Brooklyn’s Saga this morning. Just scant weeks after the release of his Hagler EP he returns with I Want
which is the first leak from his forthcoming album, Agassi (to digitally drop on 2/9).
Over a disassembled and melodic soul loop and posting in front of a kaleidoscope of VHS era images, the emcee/producer runs through a litany of wishes for his life and for the world. These include the personal like spending more time with family rather than chasing enz or more global like acceptance of more holistic methods to treating cancer and more jobs for the youth. Speaking on the track he relayed when we hear the words I want it’s usually associated with negative our personal desires and self-interest. However sometimes our desires are for others to see the world has more options than what we’ve been sold our entire lives. This song is about people putting faith in themselves.
After a two-year self-imposed hiatus, Saga returned with Hagler and Agassi, his first self-produced projects. Speaking on the difference between the two he said Hagler is just straight spittin bars n’ beats. Agassi is more rounded and covers more personal ground.
Named for tennis legend, Andre Agassi, he said of the significance I have a lot of respect and admiration for Agassi. He never felt he belonged even though he achieved everything possible in the game. When he first came into the sport as a prodigy, he achieved fame super-fast but rejected it and walked away for years. There are qualities he brought that I think more people should aspire to.
Saga’s past catalogue includes his 2015 debut full-length Out Of The Shadows which was Produced entirely by Marco Polo (Masta Ace, Torae) and his last release was Molotov with Producer Thelonious Martin (Curren$y, Pro Era). He has also appeared on tracks with such notables as Freddie Gibbs, Roc Marciano and Blu.
In addition Saga is also a member of The Drum Majors Production Team along with Marco Polo, DJ Skizz and Shylow.
