the union of Ill and Criminal works wonders through a kaleidoscope of imagery, both lyrically and musically.-Ghetto Blaster Magazine
Grown Up Rap has premiered a new video from the pairing of Illogic and DJ Criminal this morning. Experience
is taken from the newly released EP, A Change In Mantra (available in CD/Digital Format via links below) from the duo.
Filmed by long-time Illogic co-hort Blueprint (who also currently co-hosts the Super Duty Tough Work podcast with Ill) the track is an audio narrative about an underground artist is successful in his own terms but not commercially and how that doesn’t translate to financial security or necessarily support from his loved one’s.
Speaking on the narrative Illogic said It’s about 85% autobiographical but I also know it as the story of many of my peers that I came up with. Not all of us had children or families but I know that we all sacrificed a lot in order to become what we have become and built what we have built.

Several other videos from the EP have also been released in the last few months including the title track and Flight Plan
(links below). Illogic, who first came to prominence in the early 2000’s underground hip-hop scene with such comrades as RJD2, MHz, Copywrite, Camu Tao and Spitball said this EP is his most auto-biographical and direct work to date.

Criminal, who originally hails from Pittsburgh, PA has a career that often takes him to exotic and sometimes dangerous locales around the world. Many of the samples he utilizes on the EP were from vinyl that he copped while in Asia. Perhaps this lends to the eastern philosophy and down-to-earth approach of the project as a whole.
Also newly released is Criminal’s novel Saudi Arabia Undercover (Monsoon Books) about some of his experiences in the middle-east.
