Today, adidas further contributed to its commitment to END PLASTIC WASTE by opening the brand’s first sustainable football field made with Parley Ocean Plastic® and launching North America’s first ‘Academy for the Oceans’ with the University of Miami and Parley for the Oceans. Both are part of adidas’ mission to help END PLASTIC WASTE.
Located at Miami’s Edison High School, the field is made with approximately 1.8 million recycled bottles of up-cycled plastic waste, which is intercepted from remote islands, beaches, coastal communities and shorelines, preventing it from polluting our oceans. The field, being called the “1.8,” is a significant upgrade of facilities for the high school and will become a permanent fixture, serving both students and the wider Liberty City community.
“We believe that through sport we have the power to change lives, and this field is a demonstration of our taking action on that belief. More than a place for these young athletes to play, it’s a reminder of our collective responsibility to End Plastic Waste,” said Cameron Collins, Director of Football, adidas North America.
The multi-purpose field will be officially unveiled with a celebratory 7v7 football tournament for high school athletes in collaboration with Luther Campbell, co-founder and mentor to the Liberty City Warriors football program. The athletes will also debut the eco-innovative adidas ADIZERO x Parley cleats and 7v7 Parley uniforms — made with Parley Ocean Plastic®.
The new Academy for the Oceans will provide adidas and Parley with the means to effect change within the community by working with the University of Miami faculty, staff and students to elevate the discourse about environmental stewardship and sustainability with the community.
