Last night, NEON16, Buchanan’s Whisky and Spotify Secret Genius debuted “The Kids That Grew Up On Reggaeton” – a celebration of the history and uprising momentum of Reggaeton alongside Puerto Rican Grammy-nominated and BMI award-winning producer, Tainy and NEON16 President and Co-Founder, Lex Borrero in Miami. The event, powered by Buchanan’s Whisky, invited guests to raise a glass to the impact of Reggaeton and those who are contributing to culture through their influence, style and music. Guests included Lauren Jauregui (Fifth Harmony), Timbaland, Rauw Alejandro, Sky Rompiendo, Dylan Fuentes, Sebas, Justin Quiles, Cris Chill and more. The gallery located at Not Another Art Show (301 NW 61st St., Little River) will remain open until Sunday, December 8.
The event featured an exhibit dedicated to Reggaeton featuring: a photo gallery by renowned Puerto Rican photographer Omar Cruz, recognized for photographing some of the biggest Latin artists through the years, a gallery wall framing lyrics from some of Reggaeton’s classic hits by Canadian artist Anthony Ricciardi, artwork from Miami-based artist Ahol Sniffs Glue, limited-edition furniture designed by Art By Gino, and a portrait of “The 12 Disciples of Reggaeton” painted by Puerto Rican artist Lucindo Fidalgo. Guests also had the chance to insert themselves within the art, with a gas station dedicated to Daddy Yankee’s iconic “Gasolina” hit, a throne honoring the king of Reggaeton, Hector el Father, and a Bad Bunny and J Balvin “Oasis” interactive display. A curated playlist from Spotify played the hottest Reggaeton hits of all time through the evening and is now available for streaming here.
“Reggaeton has become the voice of Latin youth and a global movement. Our goal is to raise the flag, represent the culture and educate people that this form of art is more than 20 years old and has influenced music in all parts of the world. That’s what The Kids That Grew Up on Reggaeton means to us,” comented co-curator, Lex Borrero.
Throughout the night guests enjoyed signature whisky cocktails and tastings, delectable Latin culinary bites from Miami based hot-spots Mofongo’s and Sr Ceviche as well as a one-on-one “Secret Genius” discussion with Tainy and Lex, where they spoke about Tainy’s impact and contributions to the genre over the last 15 years, how he’s been a part of some of the biggest Reggaeton hits, and how they’ve seen Reggaeton impact mainstream culture.
