Pencils of Promise (PoP), the for purpose education organization whose mission is to provide access to quality education for children around the world, today announced Grammy Award-winning artist and longtime PoP supporter Lil Jon; the social charity community helping to amplify the messages of great philanthropic organizations, Karmagawa; and the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Trevor Noah; as its 2019 honorees for the upcoming Pencils of Promise Gala: An Evolution Within. The annual event, taking place Monday November 4 at Cipriani Wall Street brings the world of entertainment, art, technology and storytelling together to celebrate PoP’s transformative impact over the years.
“Our honorees have been among PoP’s most loyal and passionate supporters and strong advocates for advancing global education. We are beyond appreciative for their contributions to our efforts in evolving beyond the build and can’t wait to publicly honor their gracious devotion and celebrate with them at the Gala,” said Pencils of Promise CEO Tanya Ramos. “With the talents of Kelsey and Evan at the creative helm, the evening is sure to be epic,” she added.
The honorees will be recognized for their commitment to advancing PoP’s mission, which can be seen through Lil Jon’s dedication in opening his second school in Mafi Atitekpo, Ghana. The new school, Mafi Atitekpo, was inaugurated in 2018 and has since been operating with over 300 children enrolled. Among PoP’s most faithful supporters, Karmagawa co-founders Timothy Sykes and Mattheau Abad have donated over two million dollars through their innovative social charity network using its products, social media and website to spread messages from great charities, and have built an astonishing 30 schools with Pop to date. Through The Trevor Noah Foundation, his organization providing South African youth with the education, life skills, and social capital necessary to pursue further opportunity upon graduating high school or matric, Trevor Noah has demonstrated his dedication to global education and distinguished himself as an advocate in this field.
International street artist Kelsey Montague and photographer/surfer/skateboarder extraordinaire Evan Mock serve as the Co-Creative Directors for this year’s PoP Gala. Montague’s street art is among the most recognizable across social media and beyond, touted by the most influential names in entertainment including Taylor Swift. Mock is currently one of the biggest names in pop culture and fashion. Since he was discovered by Frank Ocean, Mock shot to fame, being featured in Vogue, V Magazine, and currently in GQ’s Fall Fashion Guide. Together, they will use their renowned artistic visions to bring “An Evolution Within” to life.
Pencils of Promise has built more than 500 schools that currently serve 100,000 students across Laos, Guatemala, and Ghana. PoP is currently leading charge among a field of innovative global nonprofits working hard toward sustainable social change and the advancements of quality educational access for all.
