Black Lives Matter Co-Founder and Reform LA Jails Founder/Chairperson, Patrisse Cullors, along with cultural architect and founder of Trap Heals, Damon Turner, recently returned from an eye-opening Cuban discovery trip in which they were personally invited by Instar’s Tania Brugeria. While in Cuba, Cullors worked with the Cuban locals, holding multiple workshops on Hip-Hop, arts, and activism. Alongside Turner, Cullors met with influential leaders across Cuba and hosted a benefit concert in Alamar with local Rastafari and Hip-Hop artist Ras Sandino, where both Turner and Sandino performed their new song, Chan Chan v349. ft. Ras Sandino.
Not only did Cullors have the opportunity to spread her activism through art, as seen in most of her performance pieces, but she was able to speak in depth with local Cuban artists and learn about the ongoing issues surrounding censoring and criminalization of artists in the Cuban 349 Decree. This act has impacted Cuban artists, withholding them from commercializing their work without government approval. The legislation allows the government to shut down performances, galleries, and concerts if they are not compliant with the strict law. A movement close to her heart, this trip proved to be reinvigorating for Cullors, deeply inspiring her as a performance artist, activist, and community organizer to impact change, learn and educate when and wherever she can.
