Reform LA Jails founder and chairperson, Black Lives Matter Global Network co-founder, performance artist, community organizer, and content creator, Patrisse Cullors, along with Compton Mayor Aja Brown, Trap Heals CEO and founder Damon Turner, and the organizers of Reform LA Jails hosted a day party designed to bring awareness to mental health in the community this weekend. This family-friendly party brought together community members and various advocates, with a special presence felt from the local music scene, with a set from Compton born and raised LVRN rapper Boogie of his songs “Silent Ride” and “Sunroof”, surprise video message from Compton rapper Buddy, and an appearance from Kendrick Sampson. This event closes out a month-long campaign of Patrisse, along with Reform LA Jails, bringing healing to the community through various initiatives including lectures, screenings and cleansing performances given by Cullors to bring awareness and push for change.
About Reform LA Jails: Reform L.A. Jails is a committee formed to support a 2020 county-wide ballot initiative to grant the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Civilian Oversight Commission with subpoena power to effectively and independently investigate misconduct and to develop a plan to reduce jail populations and to redirect the cost savings into alternatives to incarceration. Reform L.A. Jails represents a coalition of citizens, community leaders, businesses, and organizations that recognize we need a more effective strategy to reduce recidivism, prevent crime, and permanently reduce the population of people cycling in and out of jail that are experiencing mental health, drug dependency, or chronic homelessness issues.
