A TASTE OF SKY: In the Bolivian capital of La Paz, a city that sits 13,000 feet above sea level, an ambitious and unlikely culinary project has connected three people from vastly different backgrounds and is forever changing their lives.
Kenzo, a hunter raised in the wild of the Bolivian Amazon, and Maria Claudia, a native of the Andean altiplano, are far from home. They have come to La Paz for Gustu, a groundbreaking fine-dining restaurant and cooking school for the country’s underprivileged youth. Founded by acclaimed Danish restaurateur Claus Meyer, whose last project NOMA won “Best Restaurant in the World” a staggering four times; the hope is to guide these young Bolivians towards a better future as they attempt to establish their country as the world’s next great culinary destination.
However many obstacles stand between them and their dreams. For Claus, questions of colonialism and his intentions have arisen, threatening to derail Gustu’s ability to instill change. Meanwhile Maria Claudia faces intense pressure from her family to adhere to traditional female gender roles and marry rather than continuing to seek a career as a chef. Finally, Kenzo, torn between his newfound love for gastronomy and his duties to his family, must decide whether to take a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, or to return home to his family’s farm where they need him.
As the film unfolds we explore their pasts and trace how their lives have led them to where they are today. We uncover what has driven this European chef to come to Latin America, and begin to see the parallels that tie their seemingly disparate backgrounds. What we ultimately find is a unique and inspiring international story that transcends cultures, borders and multiple generations. Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most breathtakingly gorgeous countries, A Taste of Sky is a sensory experience that takes audiences on an epic journey across the rugged vistas of Bolivia, and is an exploration of family, mentorship, and legacy – all viewed through the powerful lens of food.
