Artists are rewriting the playbook for how they release music, reach their fans and find success. Nowhere is this more true than the hip-hop industry.
Spotify is exploring these untraditional stories in a new series, “The Break.” The series explores the economy of hip hop, addressing the impact of technological and social change within the music industry and the resulting ways hip hop artists get their big break. Dropping today, Monday, November 12 in RapCaviar and other playlists, the series explores the journeys to success for three up-and-coming hip hop artists and powerhouses, Tierra Whack, Taz Taylor, and LVRN.
A hip-hop artist and their crew go hand-in-hand. But who are they? What are the stories behind the “hype men – stylists – producers” that keep an artist sounding on point, looking fresh and connected to their fans all at the same time?
To find out, Spotify has joined forces with Sprite to take this narrative to the next level through a companion series – “Sprite Breakthroughs” – showcasing the crew behind the artist.
Continuing its longstanding history of empowering the hip hop community and supporting many of its rising artists, Sprite is shining a light on the young talent, tastemakers and industry trailblazers who are cutting through into the mainstream. This six-episode series provides a look behind the curtain to show how they educate themselves in the industry, motivate the artist and stay ahead of the curve.
From rap pioneer Kurtis Blow and Kid ‘n’ Play in the 1980s and 1990s to the beloved “Obey Your Thirst” campaign featuring heavy hitters like A Tribe Called Quest and of course, Nas, Sprite has an authentic and celebrated history within hip-hop culture. This ground-breaking partnership brings Sprite’s heritage within the hip hop world together with Spotify’s streaming expertise for the very first time.
According to Tierra Whack, featured in the first episode of “The Break,” her crew have been instrumental as she created her sound and style. She says that her Creative Manager and mentor Kenete Simms “let me record in his studio for free anytime I wanted when I was experimenting with my sound,” and after finding out that her makeup artist-turned-designer Tatyana Nance was a pro on the sewing machine, the rapper started “drawing up ideas for her to bring to life…[she] helps me look good!”
