One of game’s beloved big man is finally getting his due dilligence. The shot blocker icon known as Dikembe Mutombo has been chosen to be this year’s recipient of the Sager Strong Award at the 2018 NBA Awards. The Sager Strong Award is named after the late great Turner sports analyst Craig Sager is known for his tireless work reporting NBA action. Presented annually to an individual who has been a trailblazer while exemplifying courage, faith, compassion and grace, the award is bestowed upon the recipient in the form of a colorful suit jacket, a replica of the one worn by Sager during his unforgettable “Time is simply how you live your life” speech in 2016.
The former Georgetown Hoya great had a outstanding legendary career which expanded over two decades. Mutombo, who signature finger wagging was a fan favorite, was a dominant force in the paint on the defensive side as he was swatting shots left and right in his prime. But what made Dikembe a icon to the sport of basketball is the humility he provides outside of it. Mutombo is well regarded beyond the game for his humanitarian work around the world. Two decades ago, he created the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, dedicated to improving the health, education and quality of life for the people of his native Democratic Republic of the Congo. Among the many achievements for DMF, the organization opened the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in 2007, and since, the facility has treated nearly a quarter million patients. In 2009, Mutombo was named a global ambassador for the NBA by NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern. His hard work, dedication and class he continues to provide for the game of basketball has rightfully join him right next to former Pelicans head coach Monty Williams as the only recipients to receive this prestigious honor.
Tune into TNT live on June 25 as the league honors Mutombo along with all of the league’s top performers from the 2017-18 NBA season, including the exclusive unveiling of the Kia NBA MVP, Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award.
