Kendrick Lamar won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music with his album DAMN., marking an unforgettable moment in history. The Pulitzer Prize is the most distinguished award to receive in American journalism, literature, and music. When the Pulitzer Prize came about in 1917, it didn’t include the music category. However, the first and most recent recipients have been classical or jazz artists.
Not only did Kendrick receive recognition for being the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music winner, but he is the first rapper to receive the prize. When Lamar released DAMN., fans gravitated towards the album as it spoke consciously about the reality of modern African-Americans. DAMN. sold over 600,000 units within the first week. Then, Kendrick got bragging rights for being the first artist to be certified double platinum in July 2017. This is a major time for the rap community and won’t be forgotten.
