I just discovered Lil Wayne by accident 5 months ago or so. Amazon Prime Music enabled me to go through most of his catalog (at least as solo), so I could weed out the bad rap. What I was left with, though, was some of the most entertaining, hook-filled music I've heard in a long time. Lil Wayne's voice is playful, rather than a rapper who tries to talk with the lowest, toughest voice they can. Lil Wayne tells a story with his various voices and attitude. He can also not only do bedroom music (How to Love) but outright emotional love ballads (Die for You). I am impressed with his wide choices of musical instruments in various songs.

It's as simple as image. Behind every famous artist in mainstream commercial pop culture is an image. Pac didnt become as big as he is because he wouldn't stop recording or because of his edgy yet deep views on society, it's because he rocked a bandana scream thug life and became a crazy gangsta on death row. If your image is loud/bold or you're rich you run pop culture.

I know a bunch of rappers who put out music weekly and drop 3 mixtapes a year, they still get no attention cause their image isn't as fabricated or doesnt stand out enough from the sea of other gangsters or swaggedoutsnapbackskinnyjeaners.

Wayne's buzz has died down because hes got nerd-frame glasses and has calmed his flow down, but in the days of carter 2-3 he was running around shirtless throwing blood signs up with tattoos everywhere and threatening to kill other rapper's firstborns. Eminem's skills with syllables dont mean shit, he became who he is because he's prolly the only white rapper at the time thats relatable to white middle america (most kids are still tryna figure out what bubba sparx was talking about) and because he was screaming in bleach-blonde hair and throwing chainsaws at his mother. This carries over to Lady gaga blowing up immediately because her image is super-bold and loud.

50 cent... 50 cent's music for most of his career has been sub-par, yet he's still up there because of Em's co-sign and because he came in like THEEEEEE SUPER GANGSTER. Buff, cocked diesel, 9 bullet wounds, bulletproof vests. Thats how 50 got on top, but he could keep putting out whack music, he'll still stay on top as long as he stays rich and doesnt fuck up the coca cola money. It's all about image, your image needs to be bold. Kanye came in relatively quiet in terms of his image, but with comments like George Bush hates black people and taylor swift and the way his wardrobe's changed his image is anything but quiet nowadays. Image is what seperates the sea of dudes that look alike that become 1 hit wonders on 106 and park and the dudes that kill commercial top 40 stations overseas along with dominate hip-hop blogs and radio at home. Someone like Jay has always been up there in the world of hip-hop but in the world of pop, he was nobody until he started racking in 100millions annually and got with Beyonce. Just my thoughts man...
