Waka Flocka brings the ruckus with him. This rowdiness was very apparent at his Winnipeg stop for his Do Right Ü Gain Success Canadian Tour. Republic Nightclub was packed upon our arrival and after experiencing a thorough greeting by security staff we proceeded to take in the rambunctious scene. We exchanged daps with old school heads, saluted new school youngin’s and failed miserably to stop staring at the countless women. This rap show was running late (it’s mandatory they do) but DJ Dow Jones kept the crowd buzzing dropping dirty south anthem after anthem. Frankly, I don’t think the crowd would have been all that disappointed if Waka didn’t come on for another hour. People were in party mode.
Waka’s hypeman/DJ did a great job engaging the crowd and along with the drummer helped build the crowd’s anticipation to such a peak that you felt the venue would explode. Explode it did. The crowd erupted in cheers as Waka stepped on stage and launched into a steady barrage of grunts, growls and lyrics. His dreads flailed. His fans yelled. Security had their hands full. Every few minutes the barricades to the VIP section had to be pushed back. Now this is a damn party! You’re only at a Waka show to let loose and headbang. Anything else is irrelevant. Material-wise I was disappointed that he didn’t touch on too many of his mixtape tracks. Although Waka hasn’t been rapping for long he does have a considerable amount of material; at least 10 mixtapes and a couple albums. The bulk of his 45 minute set consisted of material from his debut studio album Flockaveli and Triple F Life: Fans, Friends & Family. Headbang-and-girl-fight-inducing-and-shoe-and-bra-throwing tracks included: “I Don’t Really Care”, “Grove St. Party”, “No Hands”, “O Let’s Do It”, “Hard in da Paint” and “Wild Boy”. Boy was it wild. Waka! Waka! Waka!
