New Music: Yasiin Bey – “Niggas in Poorest”

Beginning with a sample from Chameleon Street, Yasiin Bey (f.k.a. Mos Def) re-imagines the Throne’s staccato-heavy club track. The track is an exposition of the country’s youth and real-world conditions by altering the original lyrics and holding a mirror to many people’s real issues. He replaces the famous Blades of Glory sample (‘What does that even mean?’) with a quote from El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (f.k.a. Malcolm X) about his fearlessness. Isn’t that cover art, powerful?
I’m sure Yasiin made the track’s release on MLK Day on purpose.
I do wonder, though, if this would cause any kind of riff between him and Kanye, as Yasiin is signed to G.O.O.D. Music. I really do look forward to hearing his input on the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music Collaboration Album.
Take a listen after the jump. And peep the the most standout lines, after the clip.
“Doctors say I’m the illest, I ain’t got no insurance.”
“Prince William ain’t do it right, if you ask me, if I was him I’d put some black up in my family.”
“These devils out here lying, acting like the people ain’t dyin’.”
