Following the momentum of his well-received solo project, Slum Village‘s Young RJ blesses fans with his new single entitled “Issues.” “Issues” is a creative collaboration between him and BJ The Chicago Kid, that shares a similar artistry and background. RJ delivers thought provoking lyrics with BJ finessing the track with his soulful vocals. The single was co-produced by Young RJ himself and Detroit’s emerging producer, DAG.
“Issues” follows up “Wait,” his popular track with Boldy James and Pete Rock.
Young RJ is setting the bar high amongst his rap peers by linking up with unique artists in the game and making a new wave that’s undeniable. The talented Detroit artist recently sat down with us here at RESPECT. to discuss when we can expect his new project Blaq RoyalT? and working with BJ the Chicago Kid.
RESPECT.: A lot of people are wondering who Young RJ is. In a few words or less, describe yourself as an artist?
I am a GOD-fearing man, with respect to this business. As an artist, I’m a student of the game, a perfectionist, my focus as a producer is song structure, not just the beat.
RESPECT.: Being from Detroit, who are some of your musical influences?
All of the Motown artist and musicians from Marvin Gaye to James Jamerson on down…of course, J Dilla, he paved the way so I always gotta rep.
RESPECT.: As an artist, with a deep music background, and being in Slum Village, what are some keys to a longevity career?
Always staying innovative and not trying to follow a trend to stay relevant…when you chasing trends you always a step behind.
RESPECT.: How did you link with BJ the Chicago Kid? How was it collaborating with such a soulful artist? Any cool studio experiences with him?
I met BJ on a tour stop in Chicago in 2013 and we kept a relationship through management…It’s always dope collaborating with him…he brings a unique way of approaching the concept…and this one was a perfect record for him to jump on the cause of the current state of the cities we come from.
RESPECT.: When can fans expect the new album, Blaq RoyalT? Who all did you collaborate with on the album?
The album drops October 10th… I got Pete Rock, Boldy James, BJ The Chicago Kid, I’m also waiting on the last few vocals to come in…can’t wait for y’all to check it out!
RESPECT.: Any final thoughts you’d like to leave RESPECT readers with?
Just wanna thank the fans for the support in a major way and get ready for Blaq RoyalT October 10th.
