Imagine offering to help someone with their groceries and the next thing you know, they give you $300,000. Well, that’s not exactly how it happened for Chauncy Black as Matt White, the man in which he was offering to help carrying his groceries, didn’t hand him over that type of loot directly – But it came from the well wishers and good hearted people of this gofundme page which was set up by White, that allowed people to sew seeds of goodness into the life of Black and his mother, Barbara Black.
According to gma Chauncy was at the Kroger in Memphis, TN. He had been prowling the parking lot for quite some time asking random strangers to carry their groceries, so that he may buy him and his mother food. The response may not have pulled the heart strings of others, but when the 16 year-old teen asked Matt White for help, the strings of his heart pulled and played something the teen had been waiting to hear all day.
“When Chauncy approached me, it just tugged at my heart,” White said. “Here comes Chauncy, just trying to get food for him and his Mom off of the grace of other people. When I looked at him and saw what he was doing and what he was asking for, I said he was my hero.” Matt White
Soon after the request, in which Chauncy had originally asked could he carry the groceries to White’s car in exchange for donuts, White knew that the teen was hungry and offered to do much more. White took Chauncy inside the Kroger, took him aisle by aisle to get food for his home, and in the process the teen began to open up to White about himself and how his mom, Barbara Black whom is disabled. White bought a week’s worth of groceries for Chauncy to take back home. White ended up driving Chauncy home after he had missed his bus. Once he got there and saw their living conditions, he knew just how much the groceries had meant to Chauncy and his mom. Per people after Matt had took the teen home, he went in to help him unload the groceries and found that there was no food in the refrigerator, no furniture in the apartment other than a sofa; blankets were strolled along the floor with a couple of lamps.
The situation Matt White saw and incurred inspired him so much that he went home and posted the message below on his Facebook page:
I just met the most inspiring person ever. His name is Chauncy Jones. He’s a 16 year old from Memphis. He had taken the bus at 9:00 at night to get to the “rich people’s Kroger” on Highland as he called it. He approached me while I was shopping for produce asking if he could help me carry my grocery bags to my car in exchange for buying him a pack of glazed donuts. This kid looked like he had been turned down 100 times. He looked ashamed, hungry and broken. See More
“I live to fulfill God’s heart and God has a heart for the fatherless and for the needy,” White said. “The focus of this is not me and what I did, because I really didn’t do anything. I just captured a story and put it online but our community, Memphis, picked up this family and put them on a platform.” Matt White
“Words can’t express my gratitude – I’m pinching myself,” Barbara tells PEOPLE. “I thought nobody cared anymore. But I see now that they do.”
